Very possible that the start winding of the compressor motor is partially shorted. A grounded winding would cause a breaker to trip, however, a shorted start winding would not produce enough torque to turn the compressor and the run winding would not kick in resulting in the buzzing to stop in about 5 - 10 seconds (start winding timing out). I believe the AC clutch will engage if the defrost is selected. You can add haet but the dryer on AC is used to remove moisture in the air for the defrost application. Try changing to floor heat and see if compressor goes off.
