Latin for "After the fact". Also a retroactive law. Wikipedia says, it "is a law that retroactively changes the legal consequences of acts committed or the legal status of facts and relationships that existed prior to the enactment of the law." Which means that something that was legal while they were doing it but was then made illegal is viewed as illegal when up for trial. This is forbidden by the U.S. Constitution
You can think of it as meaning, "after the fact." It is used, especially in law, to talk about retroactive penalties. For instance, if they passed an ex post facto law outlawing Big Gulps, and you were pulled over, and a cop found an old Big Gulp container in your car, you would be punished, even though you bought and consumed the Big Gulp long before the law was passed.

The legal term for a law that has criminal penalties that effect people prior to the enactment of that law is called an "ex-post facto law". Ex-post facto laws are illegal in most countries and the US Constitution expressly forbids the creation or passage of an ex-post facto law.
Ex post facto laws are specifically prohibited by the Constitution.
Ex Post Facto law "Congress shall pass no Ex Post Facto law", I believe is how it appears in the constitution. It is latin for after the fact.
That would be making a law retroactive to a date before the passing of the law. The US Constitution forbids doing it. That would be known as an Ex Post Facto Law and is unconstitutional.
There is only one. It is set forth in the Constitution. Ex Post Facto Laws are prohibited.
Such a law is called Ex Post Facto.
