In the beginning on this novel the tree is described as an "irate, steely black steeple beside the river. I was damned if I would climb it." The word damned directly tells how the tree will damn Gene and Finny, Finny with a broken leg and a lack of mobility and Gene with a loss of faith and serious guilt.
Also many times Gene hints at telling Finny the truth of what happened on the tree branch, and this foreshadows the actual occurring of events that will take place later in the novel.
One allusion in "A Separate Peace" is the reference to Julius Caesar in the title of the novel. This alludes to the themes of betrayal, jealousy, and friendship that are explored in the story, similar to the relationships between characters in Shakespeare's play.
