Two English examples to start with, King Arthur & Robin Hood. Both may have been based on real people, but the characters in the stories (& movies & TV shows) are very different from any viable real original people. For a start Arthurian stories are usually depicted as being set in the Medieval period, say circa 1300, a period of English history which is recorded in minute detail - so it definitely didn't happen then. Any real 'King Arthur' would have been a local war leader around the time the Roman Empire was collapsing, and the were pulling out of England, say about 400 CE. People have been searching for traces of 'the real Camelot' for a very long time, often citing Tintagel (Cornwall) and Glastonbury (Somerset, & very close to where I live), both in the south-west of England, but a historian has recently suggested Durham in the north of England as a possible starting point for the legend as it was one of the few places in England which had a big Roman amphitheatre, which could have been taken over as a stronghold as soon as the Roman legions pulled out. So no 'Round Table' as usually imagined, the whole fort was round.
