The goal setting theory was derived after studying many successful people from all walks of life. In these studies performed by several different people it was found that those that were successful all had one thing in common and that was that they set goals. When digging a little deeper it was found that the goals these people set all had similar quality's. They included.
The goal must be clearly defined
The goal must be challenging
There must be a certain level of commitment to achieve the goal
The goal must have a deadline
And the goal must be quantifiable. (you have to be able to measure progress)
what is the purpose of setting deadline for a goal
You can define goal setting in a few words that would sum it up, " Goals attainable". An attainable goal is one that should be in your sights as Goal Setting.
I'm not sure what skill you are interesting in developing. One thing that most people are interested in doing is self-management. An OB theory that would be helpful is goal-setting theory. Goal-setting theory has extensive empirical support (i.e. it has been tested and tests support its hypotheses). Goal-setting theory states that setting difficult but achievable, specific, and time-constrained goals result in higher performance than if you set no goals or if you make them easy, not specific, etc. Other theories include theories on how to improve your career outcomes, which are the best predictors of job performance, what types of power exist, etc. In my opinion, all of these are useful.

Walmart's leadership can be characterized as a blend of both normative and path-goal theories. Normative theory focuses on leaders setting standards for behavior, which aligns with Walmart's emphasis on corporate values and ethics. Path-goal theory, on the other hand, emphasizes the leader's role in clarifying goals and removing obstacles for employees, which is evident in how Walmart's leadership provides guidance and support to its workforce.
Traditional goal setting is an approach to setting goals in which goals are set at the top level of organization and the broken into subgoals for each level of organization.

It is useful to employ visualization to your goal setting work. Can you see what a day is like after you completed your goal? Can you see what the day is like after your company completes the goal you laid out for it. If you look at that day in your minds eye everyday between now and then you win.
