A zener is a diode that has the property when reversed bias to breakdown at a specific voltage this voltage will remain constant as current increase. It is important to be aware that the diode will need to dissipate heat while it is operating. The power is the current flowing through the diode multiplied by the voltage across the diode. For zener diodes with a high reverse breakdown voltage, it can be seen that a lot of power may need to be dissipated for a relatively low current.

We can use the constant voltage as a reference voltage. Either a component can be powered directly from the reference voltage created or additional components can be used to increase the available current.
