While mutual funds is a good idea, preferably invest sip by SIP (Systematic Investment Plan); regular savings into the funds, esp. during troubled times such as these. Investing in blue-chip companies directly but systematically during a fall is a great idea too.
Diversify investments into different 'baskets' depending on your risk appetite. A thumb rule that is being followed in the investment world is to invest 100 -(ur current age) into high risk avenues like equities. 5 to 10% into gold or GOLD ETFs, esp. when gold is at a low - (Gold is usually at a low when the dollar is very strong). 10-25% in FD, 10-15% liquid in banks'
