They spent a fortune on the French and Indian Wars and couldn't raise enough to assemble a more formidable fighting force.
Since they were broke they instated many taxes that angered the American people leading to the phrase "No taxation without representation." The Americans began to adopt the Native American fighting style of guerrila warfare where they would hide in the forests and attack rather then face the army on an open field. This was made popular by Francis Marrion otherwise knows as the Swamp Fox Pretty much, the entire problem was because they needed more money and when they went to the colonist with taxes, the colonist refused, rebeled, and the Revolutionary War had broken out.
The French were the English's main rivals for countless years, and the evenntuall victory over the French came at a high price. England's countless wars cost a great deal of money pressuring it to extract resources from its colonies. This along with the development of individual political entities in Britain's colonies led to a feeling that the English were no longer needed in these areas. The main purpose of English unity( in the colonists mind) was for protection from peoples such as the French, and with their defeat that connection was no longer necessary for the colonies to survivers. The English then were not seen as protectors' They were seen as people who extracted money and wealth from the colonies at the colonists' expense.

How did Britain's splendid isolation and desire for a peaceful Europe figure into her colonial expansions overseas? If Britain was concentrating all of its' not inconsiderable resources into an aliance, or agreement, closer to home, then surely it stands to common reasoning that its' forces abroad would be weakened, and falter. Also, if Britains' desire for a peaceful Europe had been granted, then managing 'business' overseas would have been easier and more efficient, as the furthest reach of friendly soil would be a larger area coverage with which to deal. Being able to move more freely over foreign turf would have meant that they could reach further around the globe, and become engaged in peace-making conferences with more of the peoples around the globe. If dealing with nations uwilling to 'come quietly' then perhaps the large, possibly unequalled sale of Britains' allies would have helped to overwhelm them into submission. However, not everything was as peachy as it seems. The concentration on home forces meant neglecting global colonies. Oops! Gotta run! I'm supposed to be analysing that question myself right now! I'll try and find time to add on information later if I get the opportunity, but I hope this brief start helps you on your way! Bonne Chance, Rosalie! xx
