How do you replace a thermostat on a 2000 Volvo s40?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Drain coolant enough to at least empty pressure at top radiator hose. Save coolant in a container. The thermostat housing is located on top of the engine, of passenger side where the top radiator hose is clamped. Use a T-40 torx drive socket to remove the two bolts, be careful you don't damage threads. Remove the housing then remove old thermostat. I recommend replacing coolant temp sensor at same time, it is located underneath thermostat and is threaded into the thermostat housing. Both parts together will cost about $80-85 from your Volvo dealer. (Volvo Thermostat part # 271664, Volvo Coolant Temp. Sensor/IAT Sensor part # 9125463)

Use sealant (Water Pump & Thermostat Housing RTV Silicone, cost around $3) around match surfaces of housing with new thermostat in place. Carefully seat the housing and carefully thread the mounting bolts to seat the housing. When a little sealant escapes around the edges and bolts are tight STOP, do NOT over tighten. It doesn't have to be torqued on there the sealant will heal around the surfaces and bond the mount in place.

Reconnect sensor and reconnect top hose.

If you are going to drain the system, remove radiator drain plug it's located there at the passenger side of radiator and refill system.

Test for leaks Your done.

Tools needed:

Flat blade screwdriver (to remove hose clamps)

Socket wrench

T-40 torx drive socket

19mm open end wrench (to remove Coolant Temp. Sensor)

Drain Pan (to catch spilling coolant)

50/50 water/coolant (optional, if you are going to change coolant)

Besides a coil plug or wire what would cause a 4 cylinder missfire on a 2002 Volvo s40?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I had replace Bosch Platinum plugs with Volvo plugs to remedy miss firing. The Bosch Plugs worked for five to six months before I noticed the engine shuttering during acceleration, and a mechanic at a Volvo dealership told me that only Volvo plugs would work. The advice seemed a bit odd. Although, the problem was eliminated with the Volvo plugs.

How do you replace headlight bulb in Volvo 240?

User Avatar

Asked by Cowboyace

I was wondering the same thing, but gave up and just decided to give the light assembly a good look and this is how I did it.

1. To remove light cover, tilt the bottom of the headlight up. It should become loose enough to remove and expose the bulb. If it isn't loose enough you may have to unscrew the blinker assembly cover. (I had to only on one side.)

2. Pop open your hood to view the back of the bulb assembly. You'll see that the existing bulb has a notch helping to hold it in and if you push down on the notch, the notch should pop out of the holder.

3. Pull the piece with the holder and it should detach from the bulb.

4. Now, twist the grooved plastic washer surrounding the bulb. I don't remember the direction, but it doesn't take much to turn it. Remove this and place to the side.

5. Moderately pull the bulb in the direction of your engine. It should come out.

6. Take the new bulb and place it where the old one was. To get it to go in all the way, you may have to twist it to fit in the notches (this is where having the light cover off helps).

7. Once the bulb is in, you can just do all the previous directions in reverse, and then repeat for the other side.
