A Rainbow

A rainbow appears on a dismal gray day;

Like most things of beauty, it's not here to stay.

A hallmark of nature that's seldom in sight,

Not always around, it's a treasure of light.

It's not in its nature to give us delight

By touching its texture, try as we might.

We need to have senses to see the unseen,

To look at a spirit, its secrets to glean.

With violet, indigo, blue, and some green,

The yellow and orange and red can be seen.

Not taste nor a smell does its brilliance boast,

But our minds still accept this spectral host.

Lit up by a sunbeam, a gossamer ghost,

It's nothing but water, just vapor at most.

Those millions of billions of bubbles of dew,

It's sad that their grandeur enlightens so few.

Refractions of sunlight, sensed through the eyes,

Make magical moments in clearing blue skies.

They brighten the day before starting to stray,

And bring forth new hope before fading away

WHY DO rainbows have colours for kids?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Rainbows have colors because sunlight is made up of different colors of light. When sunlight passes through raindrops, it gets refracted and reflects inside the raindrop, separating the light into its different colors. This creates the spectrum of colors that we see in a rainbow.

A rainbow is like a colorful arch in the sky made up of different colors like red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. It happens when sunlight shines through raindrops in the sky, reflecting and bending the light to make a beautiful splash of colors for us to see. What is a person who studies rainbows called?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

"can anyone answer im looking to with no results"

The reason you're not getting any answers is that no one "studies rainbows". Rainbows have been essentially completely explained, and we know just about everything there is to know about them, so as you can imagine there's not a great deal of interest in studying them.

However, as always, for scientific terminology Latin is our friend. If there were such a thing as a scientist who studied rainbows, the term would be "iridologist." It sounds almost like a real science, doesn't it?

There's only one problem: the term is already in use for a pseudo-scientific medical practice (aka "quackery") in which the patterns and colors in the iris of the eye are used to pretend to "diagnose" medical conditions. So any putative rainbow-studiers would have to come up with another term, or be forced to constantly explain that they were from an entirely different pseudo-science.

Very romantic but not very useful as an answer! I don't think anyone can say why any given natural phenomenon, feature or event is beautiful because they are so only to the observer in a purely personal way, Having said that most people do agree on what they find beautiful in nature, and rainbows and other meteorological events are among the most popular. Further, it's very likely most of those who understand deeply the physics of the rainbow, would say the mathematics involved, with a lot of formidable trigonometry, are as beautiful in their way as the sight itself.

Oh,. and in case you are still worried about a little too much rain, there is not enough water on the planet to cover all the land.

How does rainbows appear in the sky?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Sunlight being refracted by rain.

When you see a rainbow, stand with your back to the Sun. The centre of the rainbow is in a direct line from the Sun, through you to the centre of the bow.

From that line the coloured bow is angled at 42 o (degrees).

There are seven colours; they are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet and indigo. The red is always on the outside of the bow and the indigo on the inside of the bow. This is because the wavelength of red light is longer, so it is seen on the longer(outside) edge. Conversely, the wavelength of indigo light is shorter, so it is seen on the shorter(inside) of the bow.

Because of 'light bending' the outside of the red edge is darker. Conversely the inside of the indigo edge is lighter,

If the rainbow is very bright, you will see a reflected bow outside the main rainbow. In the reflected bow the colours and light bending are reversed. On the very rare ocassions you may see a triple bow, outside again, with everything revered to the original form .

In the Christian religion, the rainbow is a symbol of God's covenant with every living man and creature. (The Bible, Book of Genesis, Chapter 9. )

The old weather lore in England is if you see a rainbow in the morning it is a very reliable forecast for more rain that day. Conversely, if you see a rainbow in the evening, again it is a very reliable forecast of no more rain that day.

So there you have it , about rainbows appearing in the sky!!!!!
