People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, commonly referred to as PETA, is an American animal rights organization. PETA runs campaigns and undercover investigations based around four core issues it opposes--the use of animals as food, clothing, experimentation, or entertainment--which reinforces PETA's motto: "Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment."

What does PETA support?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

PeTA supports Animal Rights- which means they don't want humans to use animals for anything. This includes using them for companionship. PeTA, along with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) do not believe in keeping animals as pets.

They would like all domestic species (dogs, cats, rabbits, cows, etc) to be extinct.

okay,

PeTA supports having pets such as a dog, cat, rabbit, etc., but they want you to treat it with care, spay or neuter it, and not abuse it. they would never wish for an animal species to become extinct.

PeTA mainly supports four core issues:

Factory Farming

Animal Testing

Animals for Entertainment

Fur Farming

PeTA is an American animal rights organization with the slogan "animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment."

They have targeted fast-food restaurants such as Wendy's, Burger King, and even gave names to some restaurants like KFC (nicknamed Kentucky Fried Cruelty) because they don't treat the animals humanly before they are made into the food at their settlement. They do this to try to get people to go Vegetarian or Vegan to stop supporting Factory Farming.

Controversially, to boycott Fur Farming, they have gotten celebrities (Eva Mendes, Klohe Kardasian, Christian Serratos, etc.) to pose nude for their "i'd rather be naked than wear fur" ads.

Getting the word about the treatment of elephants in entertainment, PeTA used the logo for the Ringling Bros. " The Greatest Show on Earth" and turned it into "The Cruelest Show on Earth" with the cartoon elephant in the picture with a tear running down it's face.

For Animal Testing, they have created a video ("testing... one, two, three") to give information about the subject at hand and use disturbing but true video footage of animals being tested with products made for humans. in the video itself, it states that testing animals is unscientific and you cannot apply the results to humans because animals have different systems than us. i would highly advise that you watch it. The link to the video is in the Related Links.

Is PETA Democratic or Republican?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

PETA stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. They don't particularly focus on either a Democrat or Republican platform. However, their target nemises, such as hunters, are typically conservative Republicans who wish to uphold their beliefs of the second amendment. It is important to note that just because they go against one typically Republican notion does not make their members or group Democrat.

So again, in short, they are not a party based political group, but rather an activist one.

PETA is neither democratic/republican organization..They are however classed as liberal and most importantly a Terrorists organization...

1) PETA president and co-founder Ingrid Newkirk has described her group's overall goal as "total animal liberation." This means no meat, no milk, no zoos, no circuses, no wool, no leather, no hunting, no fishing, and no pets (not even seeing-eye dogs). PETA is also against all medical research that requires the use of animals.

2) Despite its constant moralizing about the "unethical" treatment of animals by restaurant owners, grocers, farmers, scientists, anglers, and countless other Americans, PETA has killed over 14,400 dogs and cats at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. During 2005, PETA put to death over 90 percent of the animals it collected from members of the public.

3) PETA has given tens of thousands of dollars to convicted arsonists and other violent criminals. This includes a 2001 donation of $1,500 to the North American Earth Liberation Front (ELF), an FBI-certified "domestic terrorist" group responsible for dozens of firebombs and death threats. During the 1990s, PETA paid $70,200 to an Animal Liberation Front (ALF) activist convicted of burning down a Michigan State University research laboratory. In his sentencing recommendation, a federal prosecutor implicated PETA president Ingrid Newkirk in that crime. And PETA vegetarian campaign coordinator Bruce Friedrich told an animal rights convention in 2001 that "blowing stuff up and smashing windows" is "a great way to bring about animal liberation."

4) PETA activists regularly target children as young as six years old with anti-meat and anti-milk propaganda, often waiting outside their schools to intercept them as they walk to and from class-without notifying parents. One piece of kid-targeted PETA literature tells small children: "Your Mommy Kills Animals!" PETA brags that its messages reach over 2 million children every year, including thousands reached by e-mail without the permission of their parents. One PETA vice president told the Fox News Channel's audience: "Our campaigns are always geared towards children, and they always will be."

5) PETA has used a related organization, the PETA Foundation, to fund the misnamed Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a deceptive animal rights group that promotes itself as an unbiased source of medical and nutritional information. PCRM's president also serves as president of the PETA Foundation.

6) PETA runs campaigns seemingly calculated to offend religious believers. One entire PETA website is devoted to the claim-despite ample evidence to the contrary-that Jesus Christ was a vegetarian. PETA holds protests at houses of worship, even suing one church that tried to protect its members from Sunday-morning harassment. Its billboards taunt Christians with the message that hogs "died for their sins." PETA insists, contrary to centuries of rabbinical teaching, that the Jewish ritual of kosher slaughter shouldn't be allowed. And its infamous "Holocaust on Your Plate" campaign crassly compares the Jewish victims of Nazi genocide with farm animals.

7) PETA has repeatedly attacked research foundations like the March of Dimes, the Pediatric AIDS Foundation, and the American Cancer Society, because they support animal-based research that might uncover cures for birth defects and life-threatening diseases. PETA president Ingrid Newkirk has said that "even if animal research resulted in a cure for AIDS, we would be against it."

Why is PETA against animal welfare?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It is just another charity unifying people behind an important cause.

Unfortunately they're a case of good intentions. Over 90% of the animals they take in are killed. The majority are picked up and euthanized in a van before being tossed in a dumpster. These are the same people who protest at animal shelters for euthanizing animals. They also destroy property and attack people. Causing them to have more enemies then they would have if they too a less caustic and hypocritical approach. I knew a peta member once that would stage animal abuse pictures and got caught. Why not find actual abuse I say?

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is the worlds largest animal rights group. Founded in 1980 and headquartered in Norfolk, VA with affiliates in Germany, England, India and other countries around the globe. It is listed with the federal government as a 501(c)3 organization and donations are tax-deductible.

PETA focuses its attention on factory farms, in laboratories, in the clothing trade and in the entertainment industry. PETA also works on a variety of other issues, depending on what they feel will give themselves the most media attention. PETA is strongly anti-meat, anti-egg and anti-dairy.

PETA was recognized by a number of major news portals as one of the nations most effective charities. Major outlets such as CNN, Newsweek, Bloomberg, TIME Magazine, National Geographic, FOX News and others regularly cover PETA campaigns.

As with any organization with national attention, PETA has faced some negative publicity. The Center for Consumer Freedom, the originator of the site PetaKillsAnimals.com and ActivistCash.com, and is probably PETA's most well known detractor.

Does PETA kill animals?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A couple of people who worked at a PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) shelter were arrested for this. It turned into a public relations nightmare for PETA. But the actions of the individuals do not reflect the ideals or activities of the organization as a whole. Read the linked article and make up your own mind whether PETA did it or whether a couple of their troopers acted independently. A link is provided to a newspaper article on this 2007 incident.

----------

It seems that PETA's policy is to euthanize most, and sometimes all, of the animals rescued by its members. The headquarters has a large "kill-room" & meat freezer, and records show that only a handful of the animals PETA has rescued were even allowed to be put up for adoption. The rest - over 90% - were euthanized.

It seems that PETA is more about control & propaganda than actual animal rights. Many of the recruits are decent, honest-to-goodness animal lovers. But the people in charge have insane ideas, and encourage eco-terrorists to destroy property & kill innocent people and animals.

So yes, PETA kills dogs. If you want to fight for animal rights, join a real animal-rights group like the SPCA or Humane Society. I personally recommend the SPCA.

Can children join the PETA?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You have to be atleast thirteen to join. They want people between 13-24. But i would not advise it as peta are an evil animal killing group its true. They kill around 90% of the animals they "save" so do not donate any money let the bastards rot

What is the point on saving endangered species.?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, it is very important. The problem is that we claim that things are endangered that are not and cause large amounts of money to be wasted chasing false issues. Working to save animals that are in trouble is a valid issue. Saving polar bears because I feel good about doing so is a large waste of time and money and overall hurts many different things, including the environment.

Full form of PETA?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

PETA means People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Pamela Anderson Lee is often a celebrity spokesperson with peta, but very regular people help everyday to educate others about cruelty and suffering that animals endure. In most states, there are no laws that protect animals that are not companion animals. Animals that do not fit that definition (domestic pets), may be shocked, named, and forced into very disturbing conditions to supply products for 'humans.' It is not People Eating Tasty Animals, as some may say....

Are there any animal rights activist organisations that are against PETA?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, PETA has been the target of criticism by other animal rights advocates. The Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade, argues that some of PETA's campaigns are detrimental to the credibility of the animal rights movement. Feminists have also expressed disapproval with one of PETA's campaigns, the ""I'd rather go naked than wear fur" campaign, in which models fought the fur trade by posing nude. PETA's partnership with Hugh Hefner and Playboy Magazine did not help in improving their relationship with feminists and other animal rights advocates.

What is the purpose of PETA?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

PETA is an organization that is against cruel treatment of animals, as suggested by its name (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

Peta protests the rodeo, fur in fashion shows, KFC, etc. They also raid animal testing labs and go undercover in slaughterhouses.

Their trademark catchphrase is "Animals are not ours to eat / wear / experiment on / be entertained by / abuse in any way." Their viewpoints are considered controversial in that they represent such a small portion of the population as a whole, yet they try to influence legislation which affects the entire population.

Noted PeTA co-founder Ingrid Newkirk was once quoted as having said, "Humans have grown like a cancer. We're the biggest blight on the face of the earth."

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals This organization works to protect animals. Sadly, Peta doesnt care about dogs and cats. They take animals from shelters saying they will give them homes but they actually kill them..

PETA, has done many good things, mainly making it publicly unacceptable to wear fur (which experts say would have happened on its own), sadly they have degraded and Ingrid Newkirk is widely regarded as a nutcase (even by ex-peta members). As my vegetarian friend said, "PETA is a club for crazy vegetarians."

What does PETA do with their donations?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

They spend their money trying to pass laws to restrict the use of animals by humans. They do not rescue animals the way an animal shelter does, their money is for political purposes. They want to keep people from having pets, eating meat, being entertained by animals (movies, zoos, etc), hunting, etc. PETA is not a PAC and does not run a PAC, therefore it does not spend any money on political initiatives. PETA runs an extensive program in the Hampton Roads area to help animals and provide a free Spay/Neuture program, However the vast majority of PETA's resources are spent in public educatioin campaigns alerting people to the extreme way animals suffer in many industries.
