Why was Hurricane Sandy considered a perfect storm?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hurricane Sandy behaved in a similar manner to the Perfect Storm of 1991 in how it combined with an extratropical storm system and gained strength.

Although Sandy was only a Category 1 hurricane when it made landfall on Atlantic City, NJ on Monday, October 29, 2012, other factors combined to make it a "perfect storm." Hurricane Sandy came from a merging of several things; a storm beginning in the warmed waters of the ocean, a funneling of cold air from the Arctic that pushed it onto the coast, and a high tide that coincided with the storm swell.

Other factors that made Sandy a unique storm: its extremely low pressure (946 millibars on landfall), it's size (almost 1,000 miles wide), and it's path (making a sharp left turn into the Jersey shore, powered by high pressure from a system in Canada).

How did people prepare for Hurricane Sandy?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

People would rely largely on their instincts, remembering what the air would "feel like" before a storm or a rain. As it became more of a science, early meteorologists would use their ability to recognize specific types of clouds, the direction and speed of the wind, and other weather indications to attempt to predict what the weather would be like in the near future.

Was Hurricane Katrina or Hurricane Sandy worse?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hurricane Katrina was the most expensive hurricane in terms of destruction, and it was certainly among the worst natural disasters to hit the USA since 1900. About 1800 residents of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast died, either directly or indirectly as a result of Katrina. However, Katrina was not the worst in terms of number of deaths. The Galveston Hurricane of 1900 killed an estimated 6,000 to 12,000 people, while the 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane, killed around 2,500.
