Can you rent just the vest of a tuxedo from a place such as mens wearhouse?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Absolutely!!!

Most tuxedo rental stores will not allow the rental of individual components that make up a tuxedo, i.e., shirt, tie, vest, etc. They see it as not worth their time or effort and choose not to "fool" with such things.

Mens Wearhouse does not see it this way. Apparently, it's all in how you look at it - is the glass half empty or is it half full? My son needed just a vest and tie as he was able to wear my tux and they treated him as though he were renting full tuxedo outfits for a wedding.

The service was great, the items were top notch and was very inexpensive.

What type of shoes should you wear with a tuxedo?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You have two style options for black tie shoes: formal pumps (also called opera pumps or court shoes), or black balmoral oxford dress shoes.

Formal pumps are made of patent leather or highly-polished calfskin, with a black grosgain ribbon on the top. If the ribbon has a bow tied in it, with a band lengthwise across the center, it is called a pinched bow pump, while a pump with only a flat ribbon crossing the top is called aflat bow pump. These formal shoes are the ideal complement to a tuxedo, but as they are expensive and single-purpose, many men shy away from purchasing them.

If you don't want to shell out for formal pumps, a pair of highly-polished oxfords are also acceptable. A few men's shoe styles have become accepted as accompaniments for tuxedos, listed here in descending order of formality:

  1. Wholecut Balmoral - This is an uncommon style, wherein the uppers are a single piece of unbroken leather. A single slit is cut down from the opening and punched with eyelets for the laces. It looks quite sleek, and suits a tuxedo well.
  2. Plain-Toe Balmoral - This is your basic high-formality business dress shoe. "Balmoral" implies that the lacing system is closed - that is, the piece of leather containing the eyelets is sewn directly into the upper of the shoe, not laid on top. That makes the top smooth and even, which is preferred for black tie attire.
  3. Cap-Toe Balmoral - The same as a basic balmoral, but with the toe stitched onto the uppers, creating a horizontal line across the top about an inch back from the toe. It is a common business style, but bordering on too informal for black tie. Pair it with the more relaxed shawl collar, rather than peaked lapels.
  4. Plain-Toe Blucher - Also called derbies, bluchers have an open lacing system, meaning that the pieces of leather containing the eyelets are separate from the uppers, and layered on top of them. Black tie has begun to tolerate the intrusion of these lower-formality shoes in the last few decades, but they are decidedly less impressive than your other options.

Thin black socks should be worn with whatever style of shoe you choose. Avoid thick cotton socks, even if they are black.

What are the parts of a tuxedo?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A tuxedo is a formal evening suit distinguished primarily by satin or grosgrain facings on the jacket's lapels and buttons and a similar stripe along the outseam of the trousers. The suit is typically black or midnight blue depending on choice of wear and commonly worn with a formal shirt, shoes and other accessories. These accessories have evolved over time. The most traditional interpretation of these elements - formal shirt, formal waistcoat or cummerbund, bow tie, formal shoes - is incorporated in the black tie dress code. By the 1970s unorthodox variations were becoming popular alongside equally unorthodox tuxedos, particularly among younger men renting their formal attire rather than purchasing it. Since that time, people unconcerned with convention have opted for shirts that range from coloured to mandarin collared, and for neckwear ranging from coloured bow ties to continental ties to long ties.

What occasions is it proper for a man to wear a white tuxedo?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

  • The most common event men think about wearing a white tuxedo to is a wedding, but most weddings do not call for white tuxedos. If the wedding is on a beach or somewhere very hot, white is perfectly acceptable, but otherwise, black is more appropriate.

White tuxedos are much more common at high school proms. At proms, white creates a feeling of whimsy and innocence, and celebrates crossing over into manhood. A white tuxedo is suitable for a prom except when your date is wearing white.

White tuxedos are suitable for formal events that are taking place in extremely hot weather, such as an outdoor event at a country club, or a dinner on an upscale cruise. For those occasions when black just seems too ordinary, white tuxedos are a fine substitute.

Finally, on the rare occasion that you receive an invitation to an event that specifies "white tie," you may wear a white tuxedo. White-tie events are similar to black-tie events, but are even more formal. White-tie events were made famous in the Victorian era, where men wore white tuxedos complete with tails, top hats, and gloves in the evening. At most white-tie events, the top hat and gloves are optional, but the white tuxedo is a must.
