Interracial Marriage

Interracial marriage refers to marriages between persons of a different race. Some US States had anti-miscegenation laws that prevented persons of different races from marrying each other until these laws were struck down by the US Supreme Court in Loving v. Virginia in 1967. In some places in the world, interracial marriage remains a social taboo. In general, however, the incidence of interracial marriage is on the rise, due in part to an increase in international travel and immigration.

If parents disown their grown children for interfaith or interracial marriage do the parents take them back in the case of divorce or death?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question as it depends on the individual circumstances and dynamics within the family. Some parents may reconsider their decision and take their grown children back in the case of divorce or death, while others may maintain their disownment. Ultimately, it varies from family to family and depends on the parents' willingness to reconcile and the dynamics at play.

What is the concurring opinion in Loving v. Virginia?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In the case of Loving v. Virginia, the concurring opinion was written by Justice Potter Stewart. He agreed with the majority's ruling that Virginia's anti-miscegenation law was unconstitutional but wrote a separate concurrence to emphasize that the freedom to marry was a fundamental right protected by the Fourteenth Amendment's Due Process Clause. He argued that the Constitution prohibits interracial marriage restrictions just as it forbids measures that discriminate based on race.

Do Observant Muslims allow interracial marriage?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

This depends on the person. But, Islamically speaking, interracial marriage is allowed, and racism is highly discouraged. When Muslims stand to pray to God, race is insignificant in his eyes, as what is important is the amount of faith one has.

God (Allah in Arabic) says in the Holy Qur'an 49:13: "O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another."

This shows that God encourages us to mix races and not to view it as a boundary for segregation and enmity, but as something unique each person has.

Additional point:

The above answer is absolutely correct. In addition to the above, the only condition; per Islam teachings; is that a Muslim man can marry only who is Muslim, Christian, or Jewish. A Muslim woman can marry only a Muslim man.

What was the outcome of the case Loving v Virginia?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In 1967 it invalidated laws prohibiting interracial marriage. It ruled the Virginia law the Racial Integrity Act of 1924 was unconstitutional and overturned the Supreme court ruling Pace v. Alabama (1883). Sixteen State laws were overturned.

"Marriage is one of the "basic civil rights of man," fundamental to our very existence and survival.... To deny this fundamental freedom on so unsupportable a basis as the racial classifications embodied in these statutes, classifications so directly subversive of the principle of equality at the heart of the Fourteenth Amendment, is surely to deprive all the State's citizens of liberty without due process of law. The Fourteenth Amendment requires that the freedom of choice to marry not be restricted by invidious racial discrimination. Under our Constitution, the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual and cannot be infringed by the State."

"There is patently no legitimate overriding purpose independent of invidious racial discrimination which justifies this classification. The fact that Virginia prohibits only interracial marriages involving white persons demonstrates that the racial classifications must stand on their own justification, as measures designed to maintain White Supremacy."

When was miscegenation against the law?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Miscegenation (Latin miscere "to mix" + genus "kind") is the mixing of different racial groups, that is, marrying, cohabiting, having sexual relations and having children with a partner from outside one's racially or ethnically defined group.

In the United States Miscegentation laws were laws that banned interracial marriage and sometimes sex between members of two different races and were enforced in the Thirteen Colonies from the late seventeenth century onwards, and subsequently in several US states and US territories until 1967.

The laws were gradually repealed state-by-state during the period 1948-1967, however, the southern slave states were notoriously slow and some of these states waited till 1998 to fix language in their constitutions.

Similar laws were also enforced in Nazi Germany, from 1935 until 1945, and in South Africa during the Apartheid era, from 1948 until 1984.

The history of these laws is complex and lengthy. See the related link for a more complete discussion.

Why is the Bible against interracial marriage?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The bible is not against interracial marriages. Moses' wife Zipporah was a Cushite. Cush was an ancient African empire whose inhabitants were black. In Numbers 12 God smote Moses' brother and sister with leprosy because they criticized the fact that his wife was black. Reason for this is the possibility that interracial marriage will make the followers of the Bible god to convert to the gods of the other race. Read Exodus 34:10-16. Deuteronomy 7:1-6 & 2 Corinthians 7:39 The question is a false and leading question in that it assumes something quite false. The Bible is not against interracial marriage but it is against a Christian marrying a non-Christian.

The issue of loss of faith is a real issue but this has nothing whatsoever to do with race since people of all races are Christian believers.

If a person of the same race or a different race is not a Christian then the New Testament certainly forbids the marriage. The Old Testament principle is essentially the same. The people of the Canaanites were pagan idolaters of the most vile kind. If they were around today, many of them would be locked up for their bestiality and child-sacrifices. Both Ruth the Moabite and Rahab the inhabitant of Jericho were taken in by the Israelites and Ruth is in the family line of Jesus Christ through her marriage to Boaz.

Thus it is, as always good to understand what the Bible is actually saying and to read it in context.

Why was interracial marriage illegal?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There were many facets of this. Before slavery came to the US, interracial relationships were illegal in the colonies, though miscegenation didn't even exist as a word. Once slavery was practiced, laws against interracial relationships were used to help prevent slave uprisings and to divide people into two groups, making it easy to tell the slaves from the free. Then there were the religious beliefs and the racism.

What is the long term impact of interracial marriage?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Overall, the affects would be the same as with any other marriage. There would be a few additional challenges depending on the couple and where they live. If they live where it is unpopular, they could both face persecution, or at the least, be isolated and shunned. There are not too many places like that anymore. If they didn't grow up around each other' cultures, they would have to expand their understanding of cultural practices and norms. There would be some minor differences like learning how another race cares for their hair, since the products used and the methods are different.

There could be occasional clashes, but that would be more from social class and upbringing, not the race itself. If someone with low income values and middle class values come together, or for that matter, people of different local cultures ("Redneck," "Yankee," "Cajun," "Bourgeois," etc), there could be occasional misunderstandings. That would because of cultures and class groups, not races. However, different races may be more likely to represent different cultures and classes, but not always.

So the affects should be the same overall as with most couples, but with variations per exact couple.

Is interracial marriage illegal in any state today?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No. On June 12, 1967, the United States Supreme Court decided the case Loving v. Virginia; in a unanimous 9-0 decision, the Court ruled that any laws against interracial marriage in the US were unconstitutional and therefore no longer enforceable. At the time of the decision, such laws existed in 17 states.

Although the laws were rendered unconstitutional, they still remained on the books. The last two states to remove the laws from the books were South Carolina (in 1998), and Alabama (in 2000).
