Interfaith Marriage

Interfaith marriage refers to a marriage between persons of two different faiths, or between two denominations of the same faith (also called an interdenominational marriage). Some faiths prohibit members from marrying outside of their religion and some require special permission and/or a promise concerning which faith the couple's children will be raised in. In some denominations, those who marry outsiders are stigmatized or even shunned.

Can a Hindu woman marry a Christian man?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, a Hindu man can marry a Christian woman, regardless of their respective ages. In Western countries, marriage laws take no account of religion. In India, the Special Marriages Act applies to marriages across religions. Of course, if the woman is very much older than the man, there can be social and other issues that surround the marriage, but the law is only concerned with whether the marriage was validly entered into.

Can jehova s witnesses marry a muslim?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A Muslim man can marry a Muslim. Christian, or Jewish woman. However; before marriage; the woman must agree that if a child is to be brought up it is to be brought up in the Islamic faith. If she disagrees, then the Muslim man should not marry her.

This brings me to the issue of Muslim women not being able to marry non-Muslim men, this is mainly because of what I spoke about above. Because the man is the head figure in the household the child would most likely be influenced into his faith, not only that but the Muslim women may be obliged and/or persuaded by her non-Muslim husband to do something against Islam teachings and rules.

You are a Hindu boy and you want to marry a Muslim girl who also wants to marry you and ready to convert what steps should you take?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

According to Hinduism, a Hindu girl or boy can marry from any religion.

However, according to Islamic marriage rules, a Muslim can marry only a Muslim, Jewish, or Christian. However, if the girl or boy is neither Muslim, Christian, or Jewish (as Hindu or Buddhist or Atheist) then he / she should convert to Islam to be able to marry the Muslim boy or girl.

Another view:

Love and attraction has no bounds. Those who realize that the God is ONE and all humans are same can marry anyone from any society. Marriage is an understanding between two souls to live together in love.

Laws change country to country and if the law of your country allows you to marry without converting - you can marry and live in harmony.

Im a catholic woman dating a Jehovahs Witness man can you have a successful interfaith marriage?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The decision is between the two of you if you want to marry each other but if you choose to then your marriage won't a very happy one. If you both believe in separate things you'll slowly drift away from each other. Just think about it.

Our Watchtower repeatedly reminds us of Paul's counsel to avoid becoming 'unevenly yoked'. For example Watchtower 15th March 1982 page 31 says

'' Do not marry someone who is not serving the Lord. The inspired counsel was not, 'If you find a clean, decent person, it is permissible to court and marry that individual with the hope that he or she may eventually become a Christian [Jehovah's Witness].' Rather, God's Word clearly says: "Do not become unevenly yoked with unbelievers." (2 Corinthians 6:14) To marry someone who is not already a baptized Christian [a Jehovah's Witness] would be to disregard that serious counsel.

But what if a Witness planned to disregard God's advice and to marry someone who was not a baptized Witness? Unless there was some exceptional reason, brothers in the congregation would not want to solemnize such an unequal yoking. Nor would the Kingdom Hall be available for the wedding. It is available for marriages of two baptized Christians who are marrying "only in the Lord." Or it might sometimes be used by two persons who are regularly serving God as part of the congregation and who will soon be baptized. By not allowing the Kingdom Hall to be used by a Witness who plans to 'become unevenly yoked with an unbeliever,' the congregation elders can underscore the seriousness of God's counsel to marry "only in the Lord."

At the end of the day whether you have a successful marriage is up to you two. However, please bear in mind our Watchtower 1st Sept 1989 page 19, states that ''Only Jehovah's Witnesses, have any Scriptural hope of surviving the impending end of this doomed system .''

Can a Catholic marry a Jew?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Legally, yes. Religiously, a little more complex. It depends on what the families of these people think. Another thing to consider when marrying across religions is how will the children be raised - Jewish or Catholic? It also depends on whether the newly-weds-to-be would like some kind of religious part in the service. So the planning for the ceremony itself needs to be taken into consideration - how will both religions be celebrated if this is what is wanted? Perhaps another point to bring up with families. I know from experience that in order to marry a non-Catholic inside a Catholic church, the catholic one of the couple has to sign a special form saying that you will endeavour to raise any children within the Catholic faith. I'm not sure though what happens within a Jewish church. I would assume that the same form will apply if it is a catholic service outside of the church.

but if you are a Jew or christian then you need not be converted to Islam because christians and Jews are called 'people of the book'. as Islam, Christianity and judaism all originated from Abraham.

and yeah, ur children have got to be Muslim once born.

Ur kids must be Muslim and woman cant marry non-Muslim cause father religion is counted

You cannot marry a Muslim unless you revert to Islam. If you do get married it is not accepted in Islam and you will be living in sin. Muslim man can marry people of the book, that is Jews and Christian, but they have to believe in Prophet Mohammed as the Last Prophet of God and also that Jesus is not God or Son of God.

Muslims can not:

  1. worship any partner to Allah (God in English and same God in Christianity and Judaism) as one and only one God with no partner, no son, no father, no companion, no associate, and no equivalence.
  2. deny Quran as God words revelation to prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the angel Gabriel
  3. deny the 2nd eternal life after Day of Judgement where all people will be judged by God and either be rewarded; by God mercy; and accepted in His Paradise or be punished; due to their bad deeds and wrong faith; and pushed in His Hell fire.

Why can't I marry a Muslim girl?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You are 1) male and 2) non-Muslim, yes? OK, in Islam, the male is the chief of the household and dominiates the female in all ways. As a non-Muslim head of household, you would have the power to lead your wife away from Islam, a consequence Muslims view with horror. It's not the same when a Muslim man takes a non-Muslim wife; SHE does not have the power to influence HIM, so his faith is safe.

My boyfriend is Muslim and to marry him I am told I must convert but don't want to so what do I do?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

This may depend on where you live, and how much each of you is willing to compromise. Muhammad prohibited Muslim women from marrying non-Muslim men, but countenanced Muslim men marrying non-muslim women. Nevertheless, in some Muslim countries you may have no choice. Remember that Barack Obama's father was Muslim, while his mother was Christian, so there is no absolute requirement for you to convert. Once again, it depends on where you live and how much you, your boyfriend and each family are willing to compromise.

The holly Islam Book "Koraan" maintains full respect to Christianity and full respect to Jesus (peace upon him) and calls for mutual respect between both religions. A full chapter is mentioned in Koraan about the Virgin Mariam (or Marya).

Again, yes it is possible for a Christian girl to get married with a Muslim man while both maintaining and practicing (at home and/or Church/Mosque) their own religions.

Can an older Christian woman marry a much younger Muslim man?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are two issues here: the age difference and the different religions.

If you would not see a problem with the older Christian man dating a young Christian woman of the same age, then the age difference should not be a problem.

Some Muslim communities frown on young people dating at all, even within their own religion, preferring arranged marriages. Presumably you do not see this as a problem. Nevertheless patriarchical societies do not like their young women dating men from other societies.

You should be aware that Islam traditionally does not allow Muslim women to marry outside their religion. If you believe that marriage is an eventual possibility, then it may be necessary for one person or the other to change religions, or to have a secular wedding.

Can a non-Muslim boy marry a Muslim girl?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Answer: A Muslim man is allowed to marry a women of heaven-sent religions (Muslim or Jewish or Christian woman) as long as she has faith in the one and only one God. He is not allowed to marry woman/girl of non-heaven sent religions. However, if man has concern that the children will be influenced to be other than Muslim if he marries Jewish or Christian woman, then he should not do it. The children have to be Muslims by religion and should be raised according to Islam religion. The answer below is not much different.

Answer: Cannot marry until the non-Muslim accepts Islam and convert to Islam if the non-Muslim is not Jewish or Christian (called People of the Book). According to Quran, Woman from, 'People of Book' is allowed for marriage with a Muslim man without converting to Islam religion.

Answer: What the *!?*? Really? What are you guys Islamic extremists? You can marry anybody you want, when you want, and where you want. If you are over the legal age your free you can marry, date, and live with whoever you want to and your parents can't do anything. Conversion is stupid. You can be of different religions and be married. Screw that that's from a book. There is absolutely no evidence of a god. It's a ridiculous thought that only exists because mortal men wrote a book (same men that thought sea monsters were real and the earth was flat). It makes as much sense as believing in Harry Potter or some other fantasy story... marry who you want, screw everybody you thinks otherwise....

Answer C (Hint on answer B)Islamic faith is a contract between the Muslim and Allah (God in English) and one should follow the contract terms. Accordingly, per Islam faith, no licit marriage is allowed between a Hindu and a Muslim. If you are Muslim and you insist on this marriage, then you are breaking the terms of the Islamic faith contract. If you, as a Muslim woman or man, don't follow this requirement and instead you marry a Hindu partner, then it is your choice and you hold responsible of this choice in front of Allah (God in English) in the Judgment Day (Resurrection Day). Can a Jewish orthodox man marry a Christian woman?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A Christian is not allowed to marry a non-Christian.

However, if the Jewish adulteress had converted to Christianity, it would not matter that she was ethnically Jewish or that she had committed adultery. The Christian community would only care about what she was like as a Christian.

It might matter that she was divorced, as Christians have different opinions on the remarriage of divorcees. For example, a strict Catholic never allows it. In other churches, the relevant question might be whether there was any chance of reconciliation with her former husband. If, for example, he had already remarried, that would be taken as an indication that she was also free to remarry. Other pastors would be more interested in knowing whether she had learned from past mistakes, and would make a decision about whether or not to conduct the wedding on a case-by-case basis.

Answer CPer Islam religion, it is forbidden for a Muslim girl to marry non Muslim boy (Hindu, Jewish, Christian, Buddhist,....). Being Muslim means a contract with Allah (God in English) to follow Islam faith per Quran and prophet Muhammad teachings. Fulfilling the terms of contract assures you the God blessings in your life and afterlife. Otherwise, you will be expelled from God mercy and love. Following the terms of contract with God has priority over following the contracts or laws of a country or people

What are the chances of a Christian and Muslim love relationship working and will a Muslim man ever tell his family of the Christian girl?

User Avatar

Asked by Angieluv

The relationship would start out on a very rocky road and the chances of it getting REALLY ugly are 100%. If he doesn't live in his country and lives in the States you may stand a chance, but if his parents are in the States then that fear will eat away at your relationship.

I suggest if his parents live in the States, then have him introduce you to them. Start out slow and easy and they may just accept you. My Asian girlfriend married our best friend and her family was against it and wanted her to stay with her own race. Slowly her boyfriend won them over, they were married and have been married for 15 years. He couldn't have asked for better in-laws.

Remember ... slow and easy and meet those parents if you can.

Culture is Another Factor

According to Islamic tradition, people of the Christian and Jewish faiths are considered "People of the Book." Ultimately meaning that it is entirely permissible for a Muslim male to marry a Christian female. Theoretically speaking, your particular religious creed should not be a detrimental factor in your relationship.

What needs to be considered, however, is the native culture and nationality of the respective Muslim male. Not all Muslims are Arabs and most certainly not all Arabs are Muslim. Traditional Arab culture is molded by a highly patriarchal society, where the family, particularly the elder males, hold great influence on familial decisions of the younger generations. With that said, because his family is not aware of his premarital relationship, it is indicative of several possibilities: 1) Because it is not culturally permissible to "date" due to the traditional method of family arranged marriages and the taboo nature of premarital relationships in the Middle East, he quite possibly might feel angst about being scolded by his family and the community. However, it now appears to be less culturally frowned upon when boys engage in premarital relationships as compared to several decades past, a double standard if I may so add. 2) It would be best if things were made clear about your expectation of the relationship's future because it could mean he does not wish to marry at this point in time. 3) It could be none of the above or an amalgamation of issues. But consider this, because of the family's strong significance in Arab culture, if he truly wishes to marry or stay in a long relationship with you, then he would tell his family. Likewise, I find other ethnic groups smilarly have highly structured familial relations (subject to varying degress), such as South Asian (Pakistani and Indian), Afghani, and traditional East and Southeast Asian families.

I wish you good luck because just like in any other relationship, minus the obvious religious and cultural differences, obstacles will arise and it may or may not work out in the end.

P.S. I am a doctorate candidate studying cultural Anthropology with a specialization in the Middle East, and I wish to reassert that we are all of the human race. "Race" is a scientific term used for taxonomic purposes and should be recognized as that. The differences we speak of are cultural, not racial. There are no racial differences between African-Americans, Asians, or Caucasians. Cultural and physical, yes, but much deeper than that, definitely not. Help break down barriers by valuing people for their integrity and character and not by their supposed "race."

Can a Muslim man can marry a christian woman by civil marriage?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, even in a Christian church, but the Muslim's family will most likely have a problem with this union. Christian family may as well, it all depends on the people.

Comment on Answer aboveNo, she can't.

Marriage in Islam is defined as a contract between the two partners and Allah (God in English and same God worshiped in Christianity and Judaism). Accordingly, it should be matching all terms and conditions specified by God in His holy book Quran and by prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Even civil marriage should be matching these conditions. The licit marriage per Islam teachings is valid only:

  • A Muslim man and a Muslim, Christian, or a Jewish woman; and
  • A Muslim woman and only a Muslim man.

Hence a Muslim woman is not allowed to get married licitly to a Christian man.

It is strictly forbidden for a Muslim woman to marry a Christian man if she knows that one day she will be in front of Her Creator and will be asked about her commitments to the Islam teachings and accordingly she will be either accepted in God's Paradise or be pushed in Hell fire.

Unlicit marriage in Islam is not different than fornication which is strictly forbidden in Islam and is a big sin.
