Who has claimed to have invented the Internet?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There is no vice president that has claimed to invent the internet. During the Democratic Presidential Nomination, Al Gore claimed to have taken the initiative in creating the internet. This would imply he had a political role in bringing matters before congress, but didn't provide the technical expertise to be an inventor of the technology behind the internet.

How has the Internet changed the way we study?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Personally the internet has made me a very lazy scholar... It is soo easy to get just about any source online that as a grad student, I have not yet visited the stacks in our library... never did as an undergrad either come to think of it... and yet I graduated with honors, in 4 years, with 2 majors, from a very prestigious private college. I suppose it's what you read, not how you read it.... One particularly great internet studying moment arose when I did a google scholar search of the topic for my Master's thesis and found another recently written Master's thesis on the same (very VERY obscure) topic. When I couldn't gain access to the print version through my University's library and emails from the author's previous university proved fruitless, I looked her up on Facebook. Sure enough, after a quick facebook message to her, she emailed me a PDF of her completed thesis which then guided me to a plethora of other sources I wouldn't have ever found. Suddenly, there were 3 Neo-Futurist scholars out there and I was no longer alone on my thesis quest. It was a very cool online series of events. As a teaching assistant for a 100 level theatre appreciation course however, my undergrad students display a shocking lack of finesse with the online sources.. If I get one more term paper citing nothing but wikipedia and Joe-Schmoe's blog I may scream... not to mention the occasional blatant plaigerism. In the end, the internet, like everything else, is a wonderful thing in moderation, but can lead to a whole new level of trouble when abused.

Google is taken from the work "googol" which means 10^100, or one with one hundred 0's following it. As for the namer, most likely Larry Page or Sergey Brin, both being key roles in the history of google. More information here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Google#Early_history

Will the Internet ever shutdown?

User Avatar

Asked by Mutchy126

It is very unlikely that the "Internet" in its entirety could ever be shut down entirely; At least not by us anyway. The only way I can fathom the internet ever being shutdown completely would be via some sort of enormous global electromagnetic pulse (EMP). Nuclear blasts create enormous electromagnetic pulses...but if there were that many nuclear bombs being dropped to shutdown the net via EMP, we are pretty much screwed. However, if our sun had a bad enough solar flare directed towards earth, the EMI from the flare could knock out EMP sensitive equipment worldwide. I am not 100%, but I think although we might suffer from effects of radiation poisoning to some degree, we would live through such an event...and we would just rebuild...so the internet would return.

Can a PowerPoint slide show be displayed on the world wide web?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, you could do this. However, these would not normally be useful in a presentation, they would confuse your audience. Make your power point simple and clear if you want to get the message home.

Links etc are better covered in a training course where your audience can do things and explore for themselves.

What is Google named after?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The name "Google" was chosen from the word "googol," a mathematical term coined by Milton Sirotta, nephew of American mathematician Edward Kasner, for the number represented by 1 followed by 100 zeros. A googol, or google, represented a very large number and reflected the company's mission to organize the immense, seemingly infinite, amount of information available on the World Wide Web.

I'm not sure but as i was told by some people that Google was mis-spelt because there were two creaters where one of them was a Russian and he had wrote Google instead of Googol. I'm not sure if this is a true fact.

How do you use IRC?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You must download an irc client, or use a web based one, then you must select an irc network, ex IRC://irc.example.com (the client often leaves out IRC:// since all irc channels would use it, so you may just need to type, irc.example.com) and then join a channel (ex: #example) use the "/join #example" command, all channels start with #.
