How many people in Slovenia speak English?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A lot of Slovenians know some English, especially the younger generation. I have cousins in Slovenia and they can all speak to me in English very well. If you're ever stuck with a translation there's usually someone close by who can speak English, so no worries :)

As English is taught in schools for decades, English language is spoken in Slovenia by majority of people under 50 years of age. Older generations used to speak German but the number of speakers is declining. According to a research of the Statistical office of Slovenia, English was spoken by as many as three quarters of people aged 25-34, by almost half of people aged 35-49 and by more than a quarter of people aged 50-64.

Answer

It's not an official language but everyone learns it at school and due to it being a small country and there now being easier access to the English-speaking world a lot of Slovenians know it. Except for the older generation (because they didn't have it at school).
English is well understand by many Slovs, especially business people and students. Slovene is the official language, but Hungarian, German (Austria), and Italian are spoken widely at the respective borders.

Take a train from Venice Santa Lucia to Ljubljana. There are 2 a day and the journey is usually 4 hours. Alternatively take the train to Trieste in Italy and get the bus from there. There is even a better and quicker way. There exists Ferry Crossing Venice to Izola with the "Prince of Venice" and Vice Versa. This is a great 2-3 hour trip with fantastic views.
