Da Gama was received by the Zamorin and his subjects with traditional hospitality. The Portuguese sailors reached the palace at Calicut by the evening and were received by several Kaymals and other noblemen. They met with the Talappana Nambudiri at the entrance to the building where the Zamorin resided. Both, da Gama and the Zamorin were dressed in their best attire. After the customary greetings the Zamorin and da Gama retired to another chamber to talk about the mission on which the Portuguese had come. The chiefBrahmin was the interpreter between them.

Later the Zamorin received various gifts from the Portuguese, but Kottuval, the Muslim Koyaof Calicut and Bontaybo advised da Gama to sent gold and silver rather than goods to Zamorin. The strong colony of Arab-Muslim merchants settled in Caicut was hostile. In the meantime they represented da Gama as a mere pirate from Europe before the Zamorin, rather than an envoy of the King of Portugal. The Zamorin became more suspicious by the absence of gold or silver in the presents received. However, da Gama produced the letters from the King of Portugal to establish his authority. The letters removed the suspicions of the king and he permitted da Gama to sell his goods. The Zamorin himself bore the expenses of transporting the goods from Pantalayani to Calicut. The Zamorin sent some Konkanimerchants to buy the goods and some Nairs to guard the ware-house which was engaged for the sailors by the Kottuval.

On August 10, da Gama sent a messenger to the Zamorin with more presents to inform that it was time for him to depart for Portugal. He asked the king to send him Indian goods in exchange for the goods that still remain unsold in the ship. Zamorin again refused and said that he expects gold or silver and usual custom duties of 600 serasynes in accordance with the laws of the Kingdom of Calicut. The request of da Gama for permission to leave a factor behind in charge of the merchandise which could not sell was also turned by the Zamorin. The Zamorin detained the factor and his clerk as securities for the payment of the goods. This made da Gama furious, and he seized 22 Indians. The Zamorin at once released the factor and his clerk. However, da Gama only sent back some of the hostages to the land in return. In Portugal, the goods brought by Gama from India were computed at sixty times the cost of the entire expedition to India.
