Does internet run off of a satellite?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Not sure if I understand your question correctly, but if you are asking if satellite Internet is available the answer is yes. If you are asking if you can watch TV and surf the web at the same time, the answer is also yes. With Dish Network and Google TV you can surf the web and watch TV all on your television.

What is broadband satellite internet?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Broadband Satellite Internet is a way to receive internet connections in remote places. Technically Broadband describes internet connections which can operate on a wide (broad) spectrum (band) of different signal frequencies. Broadband Satellite Internet works by placing a stationary dish near your home or business then pointed towards a satellite in the sky. The same way that you can receive your TV channels from companies such as DirecTV or Dish Network. Most often the dishes for internet are two to three times larger than TV dishes to help narrow the signal strength better. They also will have a transmitter attached to the end that is similar to what you would see on a TV dish but larger. So when you open Internet Explore the signal goes from your computer to the modem, then transmited from your dish up to the satellite. Which then redirects the signal to a NOC or Network Of Communications. They are tied into the internet through their ISP backbones that fetch your internet content. This then returns on the same path way in reverse to get back to your computer. Due to the extreme distances that the signal must travel, satellite Internet has lag times of approximately half of a second. Which means delayed reactions for Online gaming, instant Stock trading (Day Trading) or VOIP Telephone service (Vonage, etc.). How ever the download speeds often compare to standard cable or DSL connections.

A DSL Internet connection is faster than a satellite Internet connection?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It all really depends on which phone company you have that is offering you the DSL. To my knowledge, the fastest satellite Internet connection is 12mBit/s, which is approximately 1 - 1.5 mByte/s. DSL is usually anywhere from 1.5mBit/s to 10mBit/sec. As said before, it is suggested that you check out the website of your local phone company to determine what packages they offer.

What are the advantages of Satellite Internet over DSL Internet?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

the information travels faster , dsl travels in a line and depending on where your transfer station is for dsl so yes satellite is faster goes direct into your cable. The main advantage that satellite Internet service has over DSL is that satellite Internet is available virtually anywhere in the US even in rural areas where DSL and Cable don't reach. Generally, satellite Internet service beats cable or DSL Internet when DSL or cable Internet is NOT AN OPTION. Cable or DSL access is almost always cheaper (less expensive) than satellite Internet, but not always faster.

How do you take off internet from ipod?

Assuming, by internet, you mean Safari, you can't. If you mean you want to disable wireless communications to the internet on the iPod, I don't think you can do that either. Turning off your router would be an easier solution.

Which software you can use to increase your internet connection speed?

User Avatar

Asked by TabrejSangita

Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for its own purposes (suspect for updates and interrogating your machine etc.) Here's how to get it back:

Click Start / Run

Type: gpedit.msc

This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:

Local Computer Policy / Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Network

/ QOS Packet Scheduler / Limit Reservable Bandwidth

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab:

"By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20% and ur speed will increase to a certain extent.

Which is better Hughes Net or Wild Blue?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

HughesNet brings high-speed, reliable satellite Internet access to consumers and small businesses throughout North America. HughesNet is by far the largest provider in this sector. Utilizing 12 satellites, HughesNet service coverage is continent-wide, reaching an estimated 10 million or more households and over 3 million small businesses in the U.S. that are not serviced by wired broadband technologies like cable Internet or DSL Internet service.

Wild Blue was founded in April 1995. Wild Blue provides high-speed satellite Internet service via satellite. Wild Blue launched its Internet service in June 2005. Wild Blue's second satellite, Wild Blue-1, was built by Space Systems/Loral and was launched in late 2006. Wild Blue installed its first customer in June of 2005 and currently they now have approximately 50,000 customers in North America. Wild Blue does not currently service the entire USA.

How can you login to your work PC from your home PC?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Sorry, it simply can't be done, you would need some kind of large network that connect all the computers in the world through sockets. The only thing you could do would be to run a long Ethernet cable from your house to your work.

The above answer is neive and incorrect. Remote access is built into Windows Server products and many many companies allow you to remote desktop into your work computer from your home computer. Search for "routing and remote access windows server" from any search engine to receive documentation on how to configure this Windows Server role to suite this purpose. RAS, VPN, PPP Tunneling, are all terms and technologies that provide this functionality.

The above poster is either extremely inexperienced or just kidding around. I hope he's just kidding because that advice is horrible.

What time is the Internet the busiest?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

This question has two answers, the short and the long.

The short answer is:

The internet does not really have a 'busiest' period. There is no 'cyber rush hour'.

The long answer is:

The internet is a global thing. It is available in most if not all countries world wide, which means that there are constantly people coming online, using the internet and then going offline, 24

Due to this, there is no time at which the internet is busiest. While you may be logging off to go to bed, someone on the other side of the world might be starting their morning on their computer to check emails and such.

That said, certain areas of the world have much higher population density than others, and also are better connected - meaning more people have internet access. Theoretically, then, there is no peak period, however if you could some how generate a graph of all internet activity then there may be an overall peak when the best connected, and most densely populated areas 'come online' - this would probably be early evening (local time), when people finish work and come home, kids get out of school, and so on.

Japan, for example, has a very high population density and the population is very well connected, however most of the Japanese users will visit Japanese websites which, presumably, are hosted inside Japan. Then again, for English speaking users, demand will be spread across the 24 hour period much further (as English is more widely spoken than Japanese), and would probably peak at some point during the day in the USA.

In summary, then, there is technically no time at which the 'whole internet' is busiest due to the global user base, however local demand will fluctuate, peaking every 24 hours at the time at which most of the local internet users come online. In Europe, my experience is that this tends to be early to mid evening: from about 6.00pm until 9.00pm, local time.
