How does a cv joint break?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

My 94 Grand Cherokee Limited is in the shop right now for a gas leak, and a broke CV axle. They estimated @ 400 for the CV axle if I dexcide to do it. The shop actually said if I am not 4x4ing, the jeep would go another 10 years without fixing it, it will just make the noises, but otherwise is ok not to fix????

Is it unsafe to drive a jeep with bad ball joints?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A bad ball joint isn't safe any way you look at it. Some major damage can happen if the wheel becomes dislodged from the chassis. The major component holding the wheels on are the ball joints, upper and lower, which hold the spindle that houses the axle. The spindle holds the wheel bearing, tie rod, brakes, wheel etc. You can lift the vehicle up by the front and check the wheel for play, up and down. There shouldn't be much, if any play. If there is alot of play then you shouldn't drive it much till it get's fixed. That's my opinion. Good luck.

How do you replace a cv joint in honda civic?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The easiest way to replace them is to replace the axles. If you are not mechanically inclined you should see a mechanic if you are so adept here are the steps:

1. put the front of the car up on jack stands and block the rear wheels

2. remove both front wheels or the wheel of the damaged side

3. look in the center of the brake rotor, see the nut that looks like a castle with a pin through the bolt its on? that has to come off, remove the pin and nut but don't damage the pin you will reuse it, if it brakes you can get them at an auto parts store

4. you have to remove the lower steering control arm it will be towards the back of the car attached to the spindle, it will have a nut facing up, remove the nut and gently tap the arm down to get it lose

5. look directly beneath the rotor there will be another nut, this one hold the spindle (what holds the rotor) to the lower control arm, remove it

6. now you should be able to move the lower control arm down and swing the spindle out towards you to pull the axle out the back of the spindle

7. now using a long screwdriver or pry bar follow the axle to the transmission where it meets the transmission there is a boot and a cylindrical cup where it meets the transmission use the pry bar between the cup and the transmission to pop the axle out of the transmission

8. get a new axle and reverse the steps for reinstallation however be sure that when you are putting the new axle in that you don't pull it long ways there is a slip joint inside the cup end and if you pull it too far the bearings inside might come lose.

Hope this helps but be sure to be careful and take your time.

What happens when you have a bad inner cv joint?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A bad inner CV joint will make a clicking noise when making sharper turns on the outside wheel. The clicking noise is from the ball bearing inside of the joint being loose and rattling around inside the race. I recommend getting it replaced ASAP due to the fact that if it fails it will wreak havoc and you could possible lock up the wheel it is bad on and force you to a halting stop or even worse, causing you to lose control and crash. It is always a better bet to be safer than sorry.

How do you replace the CV Joints on a 2004 Ford Escape?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

2001-2006 Escapes do not have CV joints. They have CV axles, a ball joint, and an outer tie rod joint.

Replacing the ball joint is the most difficult of the 3. You might as well do all 3 if you have a bad ball joint, unless you have recently done the others. You have to basically remove the brake caliper and rotor, if you have ABS detach the sensor, push out the CV axle from the hub, disconnect the upper sway bar linkage from the strut, disconnect the 2 bolts attaching the hub to the strut tower, remove the tie rod joint kotter pin and bolt, and then pop the tie rod joint out.

Now, the hub should be connected solely to the ball joint. It's tough getting the hub off. When the hub is off, you should now just be looking at the old ball joint in the control arm. You can use a ball-peen hammer to smack the old ball joint out, or use a ball joint press if you have one. You will definitely need to use a press to get the replacement ball joint pressed back in.

Getting everything back together can be a bit tricky; it is better to get the hub back on the new ball joint, re-connect the CV axle into the hub, and then get the hub assembly back into the strut tower connection. You will have to use significant force to lower the control arm to get the bolt holes in the hub and strut connection to line up (i.e. 1 person standing on it, the other getting the bolts in). After you attach the hub to the strut tower, you will then be able to use a jack to raise the control arm (and hub/strut tower) enough to get the upper sway bar linkage back in.

Then reconnect the tie-rod joint, throw the rotor back on, and hook up the brake caliper again (and ABS sensor if you have).

I just this today and managed to get it done in about 3 hours. I'm not a mechanic, but I'm pretty good and this was a pain and was pretty messy. I also highly recommend the MOOG replacement parts for the sway bar linkage, ball joint, and outer tie-rod. They are engineered far better than the original Ford parts and are inexpensive.

You need to replace the ball joint when you hear creaking and grinding when you are slowing down to an almost complete stop, as if the wheel were about to grind or snap off. Also note that if you replace the outer tie-rod joint, and lose track of where it was set, you will need to get an alignment.

If I have my front struts replaced does that system include new CV joints?

The consumable parts of the front suspension are the struts, CV shafts, tie rods (and ends) wheel bearings, and ball joints. Any of the parts can be replaced individually and typically wear out at different rates.

What happens when a cv joint goes bad?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

When a CV joint goes bad you will hear a clicking noise coming from the front end. Which ever way you turn the outside wheel will click due to the load going to that wheel and you will hear a distinct clicking sound. If you drive on it long enough it can completely fail and can get quite costly you should go out now and get a new one if it is bad. You do not want to have to pay for a tow and risk tearing up the internals to your engine by driving on a bad CV!
