Yes. It is easier for a woman who has had a baby to produce milk later but it has been known for women who have never been pregnant to breastfeed an adopted baby. However if you are not trying to feed a baby and are producing milk you should see a doctor as you may have a hormone imbalance.

If you are breast feeding the brain will tell the body to make milk until you stop. If you are not breast feeding it can take up to a week to ten days for the milk to stop producing, Wear a good support bra, do not stimulate the nipples this tells the body you need more milk, avoid hot water on your breast. If the breast are engorged freeze cabbage leaves and put them in your bra. This will help.

How long does a woman produce milk?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A woman will, in usual circumstances, continue to produce milk for as long as she is feeding her child. Your body will produce enough milk to meet the demand of your baby. If you continue feeding exclusively for 6 months, your body will produce enough milk for this, if you cut to two feeds a day following this your milk production will reduce. It is unlikely it will stop after successfully breastfeeding.

There are instances when women cannot produce breastmilk, but this is not the usual.

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If an infant has a uti, you should defiantly treat with medication. However, cranberries have been known to help speed treatment in adults, so, at your infant's primary caregiver's discretion, and in addition to the medication, you should be able to give your infant diluted cranberry juice to help speed treatment.

If you have excess breast milk can you use it in your brownies?

User Avatar

Asked by Black4lyfe

Breast milk can be used in recipes for brownies or anything else. What you have to watch is that breast milk is much different than cow's milk. Human milk has much less fat than cow's milk and this will change the outcome of your recipe. Give it a try and let us know your results. This would be a great use of expressed breast milk that the baby does not need.

How long should you wait to breastfeed your child after drinking wine?

User Avatar

"Alcohol passes to the baby in small amounts in breast milk. The milk will smell different to the baby and may affect their feeding, sleeping or digestion. The best advice is to avoid drinking shortly before a baby's feed."[29] "Alcohol clears from a mother's milk at the rate of around one unit [8g] every two hours. So try to avoid alcohol before breastfeeding, or plan ahead and express milk if you know you'll be drinking."[30] "There is little research evidence available about the effect that [alcohol in breast milk] has on the baby, although practitioners report that, even at relatively low levels of drinking, it may reduce the amount of milk available and cause irritability, poor feeding and sleep disturbance in the infant. Given these concerns, a prudent approach is advised."[1] * Australia: "Women who are breastfeeding are advised not to exceed the levels of drinking recommended during pregnancy, and may consider not drinking at all."[1] * Iceland: Advise that women abstain from alcohol during breast feeding because no safe consumption level exists. * New Zealand: "The guidelines recommend women do not drink alcohol, smoke, or use non-prescription drugs unless prescribed during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as these can all affect the growth and development of the baby."[25] * United Kingdom: "The occasional drink - one to two units [8-16g] no more than once or twice a week - probably won't do any harm. Any more than this isn't good, as it can make the baby so sleepy that it won't take enough milk."[30] Probably not. http://www.cfpc.ca/cfp/2002/Jan/vol48-jan-clinical-1.asp Should answer your questions.

How much water should a breastfeeding woman drink?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There is no magic answer to this one that fits all nursing mothers. The best rule of thumb is to always make sure that you are taking in liquids. While straight water is great for you and your milk production, your body's need for water can be satisfied just as well with tea or other (non alcoholic ) drinks. Rather than forcing yourself to remember to drink a certain number of glasses of water each day, just avail yourself to refreshing glasses of water through out the day. Listen to your body, if you're thirsty drink! If there is any one rule I would suggest it would be to try to have a glass of water next to you when you nurse your child. As you nurse your body will call out for a replacement of fluids. Having a glass of water you can sip from while nursing will satisfy this need. Of course the other indicator that you are drinking enough will be seen in your milk production. If you are having trouble making enough milk, try drinking more water. Do be wary of anyone telling you to drink this or that certain thing. Water is always the best thing for anyone to drink. If someone is trying to sell you their magic elixir, just say no thanks drink a glass of water and put the money you save into your child's college savings account.

Breastfeeding and alcohol?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Rachel, some doctors say that if you drink small amounts of alcohol in moderation and not too often, you and you're baby will be fine. But just recently I learned quite a bit of information about Fetal Alcohol Syndrome - and if there was ANY chance ... even a .000000001% chance it could harm my baby, after seeing what could happen, I wouldn't so much as take a sip. Of course, some women drink their entire pregnancy and their babies turn out fine. I just wouldn't want to be the woman who had to sit and wonder if my baby would be born without the bridge to its nose, or very short fingers, or missing a few toes or fingers, just because I had a few drinks during the time those things were developing. By the way, a 12 oz. beer and a 4 oz. glass of wine is the same thing as a 12 oz. shot of liquor. Protect your baby. Don't drink. If you're craving beer or wine, which many pregnant women report, try non-alcoholic beer or non-alcoholic wine. I know it may not taste as great, but it will taste similar and may help to feed the craving the safe way. Hope this helped!

Pregnant women should steer clear of quinine-containing beverages!

BfR believes labelling is needed

The information "contains quinine" is stated on every tonic or bitter lemon beverage. But only few consumers will know why. Even if the enjoyment of quinine-containing beverages is not problematic for most of the population, the consumption of larger amounts can be harmful for some individuals. "Pregnant women, in particular, should refrain from consuming this substance for precautionary reasons", says BfR President Professor Dr. Dr. Andreas Hensel. People who have been advised against quinine because of a specific clinical picture or an oversensitivity to cinchona alkaloids, should avoid quinine-containing beverages. In order to raise awareness amongst consumers about possible risks, BfR recommends that the previous labelling be extended to include specific information for pregnant women and other specific target groups.

Name the breeds of cow with their lactation period?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There is no use doing this because all breeds will lactate for the same amount of time, being around 6 to 10 months on average. Most dairy breeds, especially Holstein and Jersey, will most often go 10 months or more in their lactation, whereas beef breeds stay in that particular time period. Many other not-so-popular dairy breeds also tend to stick to the 10-month lactation period, such as Canadiennes, Dutch Belted, Angeln, Normande and others. Beef breeds include Brahman, Nelore, Guzerat, Charolais, Angus, Hereford, Gelbvieh, Shorthorn and others.

Is leaking breast milk during pregnancy safe to drink?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

For babies? Sure it is, as long as the milk doesn't pick up any bacteria as it trickles down some surfaces. But if you lay on your back, then the milk won't leak/won't leak as much. Good luck! Besides, the babies, during pregnancy, are inside your body, so the milk won't affect them. But for you? Sure it's safe to drink.
