There are several TYPES of RJ-45 connector and the differences in them are in regards to the types of cable to be used in them. Some examples are, "Stranded wire" to be used with stranded (more flexible) conductors, "Solid Conductor" to be used to terminate cables with a solid wire and "Universal" which may work on either.

The specific difference in them is in the spades that are designed to cut through the insulator and provide a mechanical connection with the conductor inside upon crimping.
