What skills are needed for short track speed skating?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

First of all, they need start young, and have to just LOVE figure skating that they cannot live without practice. But the most important thing is their body shape, length, size, and weight. They need to be long(but if figure skaters are too tall, they wouldn't look natural, because the blade is like 5cm long.)and thin but have big and thick bones. This allows them to be able to jump high and ride smoothly. Also, they have to be pretty, especially if they are girls, because if they are not pretty, even if their skills are excellent, you cannot see the talent in that girl. They have to be able to control theirselves, because they cannot have much fat in their body. A lot of fat means less skills to figure skate. They have to control what they eat, and when they eat. For example, Yuna Kim, the Korean goldmedalist, she is beatiful, not too tall, not too short, skinny, has long legs, not much fat, skillful, practices a lot, has big and thick bones, log arms, small boobs(which does not shake when she jumps, so helpful-no offense, Yuna!^^), light movements, and etc. I am not Korean, but personally, I think she is a perfect example of golden section. * Yuna started taking figure skating seriously at the age of 7.

What do Speed Skaters wear when skating?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are many different thigs that you can wear.

If you are indoors, you obviously don't want to be wearing a winter jacket, because you would be way too hot. But if you are outside and in the cold, you probably want to wear more layers, but also things that aren't going to make you the most un-aerodynamic thing out there. If you wear a sin suit, like most skaters do, I personally wear a warm, long sleeve shirt and then the suit over top (when I'm outside) But when I'm inside, i simply wear compression shorts and my skin suit.

And then you have to wear skates and a helmet and all that too.

What is the fastest 100 meter speed skate?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In speed skating the milliseconds are very important, especially in the 100m. 9.58 is the 100m world record. In speed skating there are many different age categories. There is "Open" which is people of any age, usually the fastest people. The Olympics and World Cups are open, it does not matter how old you are. When you are still a kid, or teenager you are in divisions of every 2 years. It's like high school sports, when you're a junior you with grade 9's AND 10's. When senior your with 11's and 12's. However there is still usually an open category for the fastest skaters.

As 100 meters race: 9.40 seconds (Yuya Oikawa). In a 500 meter race, the first 100 meters are also clocked: the fastest there is 9.37 seconds (Masaaki Kobayashi). Ladies the times are 10.21 and 10.13 respectivly (by Jenny Wolf).

That the first hundred meters time over 500 meter is faster than the official record, is probably due to the fact that 100 meters are rarely skated, and 500 meters very often.

Difference of speed skates and figure skates?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The recreational skate is not designed for the speeds that the figure skate is. It is a "crossover" between the figure skate and the hockey skate. It is not designed to be as precise in turnings and stops as the figure skate. However, if you do not wish to invest in figure skates for the novice (just in case it's another whim) recreational skates are a good option. The novice learns to skate and has fun without the expense of the professional skate.

Why do speed skating turn left?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Well, don't know if you noticed but there is a wall to right. lol.. i never thought of that.. but anyway, its just the way the tracks were laid out, but they do turn right on the road courses. Ok the answer of because the wall is on the right side makes no sense at all if they turn their cars the other way on the track the wall would be on the left. They turn left because the driver seat is on the left side of the car so their visablity is much greater on the left their visibility to the right is not that great. Just like if you your self are going around corners it is easier to turn to the left then the right because you are on the right.

It is for safety. Back in the day, when NASCAR was called "stock cars", the cars were based off cars produced for American streets. Cars designed for American streets have the steering wheel on the left. If cars went clockwise (turned right) the driver would be pinned against the wall, when they crashed in a turn. The old Riverside (California) road course had a long sweeping righthand turn with an outside wall. At full speed around that corner the drivers would be right against the wall.

What type of energy is used during speed skating?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There is a large conversion of chemical energy to mechanical energy in the body of the skater. Lots of that! (That may be part of the reason for being out there!) That is what the muscles are doing all the time - converting chemical energy to mechanical energy. The body is a chemical engine, and we convert chemical energy into mechanical energy every moment we are alive. There is more, so let's look! There will be conversion of potential energy to mechanical energy at all time the skater is in motion, too. And mechanical energy is converted to potential energy as well. This may not be obvious, but walking is a constant process of converting potential energy to mechanical energy and vice versa. When we walk, we lean forward and gravity begins to pull us down. We're converting potential energy into kinetic (mechanical) energy. We then put out a foot and lift ourselves back up that tiny bit that we "fell" and that's converting mechanical energy into potential energy because we "lifted" ourselves upright again. Then we start all over with the next step. Make sense? Walking, running or skating all put the same principles into motion. The mechanical energy of friction and its conversion into heat happens in the skates, particularly in the bearings and wheels. The motion - any at all - will create a bit of heat due to friction. The more the motion, the more mechanical energy is converted into heat. Even with good bearings that are properly lubricated, they assembly will warm up. The wheels will be warm to the touch after only a brief time of skating, too. You know why? Yup. Conversion of the mechanical energy of friction into heat energy. There's a lot going on when we skate!

What are the equipment used in speed skating?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

for basic lessons, you will need skates, gloves, a jacket, and cloths you can move in. small children sometimes wear helmets and snowpants.

for competitive skaters, you need a practice dress [for girls] or practice outfit [for guys] good skates, a warm up jacket, thing mittens, tights, knee high tights [used as socks], water bottle, kleenex, skate guards, soakers, a washcloth to dry your skates, and the music for your program.
For figure skating you need:

1. A jacket or fleece: its important to stay warm while skating.

2. Figure skates: proper skates are needed to do jumps. NO HOCKEY SKATES.

3. long socks: not knee high socks, just socks that go above your skates. (otherwise you`ll get blisters)

4. Yoga pants or other stretchy pants: no jeans, you need room to stretch tight pants aren`t good.

5. Pony tail or bun: if you`re a girl, you`ll need to tie your hair up or your hair will fall in your face while you spin.

6. Skate guards: protect you blades or they`ll get dull.

7. A bag: to put your skates in.

8. Gloves: keep your hands warm.

9. Water bottle: figure skating is hard work so you will probably get thirsty.

10. A cloth: to dry your skates when you finish skating.

Speed skating gold medalist Karin?

User Avatar

Once you reach a high level of compatition in speed skating, you do whats called "Single Distance Championships". This is when a person only competes in his/her best distance, Some people do more than one distance, but many perfer to just focouson one.

Therefore there is no one winner for 1990, there would be winners for both male and female, and for every distance. There is the 500m, 1000m, 1500m and 3K races, there may be more but those are the basic and most common ones.
