What are some reasons for an enlarged liver?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

An enlarged liver, also known as hepatomegaly, can be caused by various underlying conditions. It's essential to identify the specific cause to determine the appropriate treatment. Here are some common reasons for an enlarged liver:

Alcoholic Liver Disease:

Excessive alcohol consumption over an extended period can lead to liver inflammation and scarring, causing the liver to enlarge.

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD):

Accumulation of fat in the liver, not related to alcohol consumption. It is often associated with obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome.

Hepatitis:

Viral infections such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or autoimmune hepatitis can cause liver inflammation and enlargement.

Cirrhosis:

Long-term liver damage, often a result of chronic conditions like alcohol abuse, hepatitis, or NAFLD, can lead to cirrhosis and liver enlargement.

Hemochromatosis:

A genetic disorder causing excessive iron absorption, leading to iron accumulation in the liver and other organs.

Wilson's Disease:

A rare genetic disorder that results in the buildup of copper in the liver and other organs.

Infectious Mononucleosis:

A viral infection, often caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, can lead to liver inflammation and enlargement.

Heart Failure:

Severe heart conditions can result in congestion in the liver's blood vessels, leading to enlargement.

Liver Tumors:

Both benign and malignant tumors can cause the liver to enlarge. Hepatocellular carcinoma is an example of a primary liver cancer.

Hepatic Cysts:

Fluid-filled sacs in the liver, which can cause enlargement.

Glycogen Storage Diseases:

Genetic disorders affecting the storage and release of glycogen can lead to liver enlargement.

Prescription Medications:

Certain medications, especially those with potential liver side effects, may cause hepatomegaly.

Granulomatous Diseases:

Inflammatory conditions like sarcoidosis can lead to the formation of granulomas in the liver, causing enlargement.

Is there difference between litter and pollution?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, there is a difference between litter and pollution. Litter refers to the careless disposal of waste materials in public areas, such as streets, parks, or beaches. Pollution, on the other hand, refers to the contamination of natural resources like air, water, or soil by harmful substances, which can have widespread negative effects on the environment and human health. While litter can contribute to pollution if it is not properly managed, pollution is a broader issue that encompasses various sources and types of harmful substances in the environment.

How do you fix the pollution?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Step 1 Control water pollution in your home by using non-toxic soaps, detergents and cleaning products. Refrain from the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides on your lawn and gardens. Always dispose of paints, motor oil, gasoline, antifreeze and other harmful chemicals in accordance with your local laws and safety regulations. Step 2 Protect groundwater, which is critical for drinking water, irrigation systems and natural ecosystems. If you are using chemicals that may be harmful to the environment, store them correctly. Improperly stored chemicals can slowly seep into the groundwater system, so keep them in tightly sealed containers, inside of structures with cement floors, to avoid groundwater contamination. Step 3 Prevent polluted runoff and soil erosion. Polluted runoff is caused when rain washes toxic pollutants into surface waters from sources that include city streets, farms, or logging and mining sites. Plant bushes and trees along roads and natural water sources. The roots of trees and bushes can slow the speed of runoff and erosion, protecting surface water. Step 4 Write letters to your state representative and congressman to express your concerns about water pollution. Ask them to promote more sustainable agricultural methods and mention that you feel it is time for Congress to create and enforce stricter mandatory laws regarding water pollution.

How much municipal waste is recycled each year?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Household waste:Recyclable:
  • All clean paper, newspaper and cardboard
  • All clean steel and aluminium cans
  • All glass bottles and jars
  • Most kinds of clean plastic containers and bottles
  • Electronic waste, old TVs, radios, computers, printers

Compostable (or recycled through a worm farm or fed to animals)

  • All leaves, small branches and vegetable peelings
  • Food scraps (no meat or fish in the compost)

Although just about everything is recyclable, including all plastic, you may find that the recyclers in your area will not take everything! It depends on the facilities they have and how economic the process is for them.

What are the disadvantages of landfills?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

should'nt you look at the rubbish problem another way , Singapore should produce less garbage ( they say its an evolved country and rich), get rid not only of plastic bags , but all that paper and plastic things are sold in . Also get rid of the Singapore BUT syndrome (buy use throw) , try and repair , that goes from cars to everything in the home , and also homes , why knock down and rebuild all the time .

Try more and more ecological education , and tell people what will really happen in the future if they don't stop , use shock tactics. The biggest problem is its not government policy to reduce manufacturing or consumption , not good for the way they look at economics , and what would they use for landfill , Singapore is not renowned for being an ecological place , their ecology is surface deep..

What are facts about a synagogue?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

synagogue (sĭn'əgŏg) [Gr.,=assembly], in Judaism, a place of assembly for worship, education, and communal affairs. The origins of the institution are unclear. One tradition dates it to the Babylonian exile of the 6th cent. B.C. The returnees may have brought back with them the basic structure that was to be developed by the 1st cent. A.D. into a well-defined institution around which Jewish religious, intellectual, and communal life was to be centered from this earliest period into the present. Other scholars believe the synagogue arose after the Hasmonean revolt (167-164 B.C.) as a Pharisaic alternative to the Temple cult. The destruction of the Temple (A.D. 70) and the Diaspora over the following centuries increased the synagogue's importance. Services in the synagogue were conducted in a simpler manner than in the Temple. There was no officially appointed priest, the services being conducted by a chazan (reader). The role the synagogue played in preserving Judaism intact through the centuries cannot be overestimated, nor can its influence as an intellectual and cultural force. In the modern period, the reform movement restricted its scope to almost purely religious purposes, although among the Orthodox Jews its purview did not diminish. In more recent times the synagogue has again taken on its former functions as a social and communal center. The architectural appearance of the synagogue has usually not differed from that of local non-Jewish forms. The interior includes an ark in which the Torah scrolls are held and a platform from which they are read. In modern times, a pulpit from which to preach has also become common, and in many synagogues the three are combined on one platform. In the United States, the national synagogue associations, the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations, the United Synagogue of America (Conservative), and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (Reform) are organized in the Synagogue Council of America.
