Can rabbits eat avocados and tomatoes?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Some fruits and vegetables are okay as a treat, but they shouldn't be a regular part of your rabbit's diet. Rabbits should mostly eat hay; they should also eat pellets and fresh leafy greens daily.

Neither tomato nor avocado are good for rabbits.

Tomato leaves, vines, and stems are toxic to rabbits. Tomato fruit is not toxic, but it isn't very healthy, either; it may not be dangerous as a treat, but there are better treats to choose from (like carrot, blueberry, papaya, or pineapple).

Avocado contain persin, a compound known to be toxic to rabbits. Rabbits should not eat avocado, especially not the leaves or pit.

Information on pinching back tomatoes?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Tomato plants will put up one main stem and then grow side stems off of the main stem. Suckers will start growing out of the area where the side stem shoots off of the main stem. To prune or pinch your sucker off, simply grab it at its base and snap off. I have linked an article that also gives a photo to show how easy it is to prune your tomato plants.

Do you plant tomato in the ground or in a pot?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Potting mix is what is advised by my gardner husband to plant tomatoes, because it contains peat moss and usually nutrients which will adhere to the roots and keep them moist and fed longer. The soil usually does not contain the substance which will hold moisture over longer periods of time. Water only when mix seems dry when you poke your finger down into the soil at the first joint.

Does a tomato horn worm sting?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Goodness, yes. A few tomato hornworms cans reduce a boisterous mature tomato plant to a green spray of sticks in a few days. They'll even eat the fruits. They're bad news for gardeners. You will know you have them by finding areas where foliage is gone leaving only stems. Just beneath this you'll find robust dark green turds that resemble miniature horse apples. They hide camouflaged perfectly on the bottoms of the leaves. I have good eyes for them, but I have a friend who said that if you spray water from a little spray bottle they'll wiggle and show themselves. BT is an organic way to rid yourself of them.

Can I use diced tomatoes instead of tomato paste?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

While it is possible to dice them for canning, they will become very mushy in consistency during the cooking process. It does enable more to be fitted into the jar if the final consistency isn't a problem.

Try this. Par boil them until the skin splits and remove from heat. Remove the skin and quarter them. This helps to see any bad spots that may be hidden inside the tomato. I used to can in mason jars but now I pour the tomatos into a quart size ziplock bag and freeze them flat. They freeze fast and take only minutes to thaw in warm water.
