What are some cases of artificial insemination?

Donor insemination is a broad term that covers any procedure which improves the chances of becoming pregnant by artificially placing semen within the womb using a syringe. The name of the specific procedure defines where the specialist actually places the sperm.

In Intracervical insemination, ICI, the sperm is injected into the cervix, and in Intrauterine insemination, IUI, the sperm is injected into the uterus.

In short, IUI takes the place of the man ejaculating inside the woman. As such, IUI is typically used to treat male infertility, specifically disorders relating to the testes and sperm production.

Your doctor will decide whether or not to use fertility drugs to stimulate ovulation during IUI. If so, these generally involve injections; eggs are then tracked through vaginal ultrasound scans. When the eggs mature, a hormone is injected to stimulate the ovary to release the egg.

The actual IUI procedure begins about 36 hours later. The man supplies a semen sample, which is 'washed' to remove the seminal fluid and keep only the healthiest sperm. Using a speculum, a catheter is inserted into the womb: the prepared sperm are inserted through the catheter.

The entire IUI procedure only takes a few minutes and is largely painless. However, since a speculum is used and since sometimes it can be difficult to get the catheter through the cervix, IUI can prove somewhat uncomfortable.

Are test tube babies give negative or positive impact?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes. they are real. but they are NOT called 'test tube' babies. It makes it sound like a Frankenstein experiment and many people are offended by the term.

They were called this in the 80's when little was known about them and it really was an experiment. But now, it is more than that. Its is a way for a couple to have a child, when they were previously unable to, because of a number of factors; a low sperm count, several miscarriages or a hostile womb.

They are embryos that are made with a sperm and an egg (either of these could be donated) that are artificially inseminated into a 'surrogate' who carries the child to full term and gives birth for the couple. Host surrogates do not use their own eggs whereas straight surrogates do, however, they are still not considered the mother, and the child is brought up by its IPs (Intended Parents).

If you really must nickname them, its a 'Petri-dish' baby. They are conceived in a petri dish as this provides the proper conditions for cell division. Test tubes are not used in the process.

How do you do artificial insemination at home?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Considering that you have the semen or ready access to said semen. the most utilitarian method is the Turkey Baster ( www.turkeybaster.net).

First ensuring that the semen is fresh, less than 4 hours from ejaculation, or fully thawed if aquiring from a sperm bank.

Suction the semen into the turkey baster keeping it in the tip. (It is best to keep the tip pointing down during the entire process.)

Insert the turkey baster into the vagina till it reaches the entrance to the uterus, successful impregnation is less likely to occur if you push all the way to the back of the vaginal wall. Explore the space ahead of time with the turkey baster to ensure you are familiar with the placing.

Once the head of the turkey baster is inserted against the entrance to the uterus, squeeze forcefully to implant the semen as ejaculation would.

This is a proven method of self insemination, more easily done with a partner than on one's own.

Can you artificial insemination after tubal ligition?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, Tubal ligation only prevents a womans own egg from reaching her own uterus naturally. Her eggs can be retrieved by a physician and fertilized artificially (test tube fertilization)and then implanted in her uterus to obtain a normal pregnancy.A donors egg could also be used. This is of course barring any other medical problems with her reproductive system.

Can sperm be retrieved from a man once he has had a vasectomy and used for artificial insemination?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, a man can. My husband had a vasectomy 7 years before I met him and we now have a four year old and we're trying for another. It just means the doctor uses a needle into the testicles and they take sperm from further up, it is a whole lot cheaper and easier than a reversal. You just go see your local IVF unit or GP.

They either have to reverse it, or go in to his testicles with a needle and remove the sperm that way.

Note: when considering the cost of each proceedure, remember that if you choose IVF, you pay to have the sperm harvested and for each attempted fertilization.

Is there a downside to artificial insemination?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you are being inseminated by someones sperm that you know it can be good for instance if you don't seem to be getting pregnant thru intercourse and you use this way it is fine. The con is if you do not know the donor then the child wont have a biological father that they know, however, if there is a man in your life who is willing to be the father it can be an ok way to conceive if he can not inseminate you himself

Why would someone use artificial insemination?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A woman is given fertility drugs to help her body produce several eggs at once, rather than the usual one per month. When a sufficient number of eggs have ripened they are extracted from her body with a long puncture needle, and kept at a laboritory.

The man then hands in a dose of semen (obtained from masturbation) which is 'worked up' to have only the most mobile (quickest) sperm cells remain.

The eggs and sperm are then put together in a test tube, in order to find each other more easily as they would inside a woman's body.

If one or more eggs are successfully fertilised one or two (usually not more, in view of medical risks) will be put back into the woman's body in hopes that they might nestle there resulting in pregnancy.

Success rate of IVF is roughly 20%-25%.
