Are there any apartments in portland Oregon that will rent to a felon?

I am a property manager and I have found that all property management COMPANIES I have checked with will not. Especially due to economic and other reasons more people are renting so companies can set even higher criteria. Private owners are more willing to deal with things on case by case basis and some do not check at all. Craigslist is the best place I know of to find these kind of rentals. My understanding is that being up front is best. Much better then them finding out later and wondering what else you are not telling them. Be honest and brief about what happened, what you did to overcome it, who you are today. Back that up with references (one from close personal contact, one from public figure/in a public position, one from person who is educated in the subject and who knows you), and be willing to handle rejection. I wish I had a better answer. It is unfair in a lot of cases and it is difficult turning people in your situation away due to company policy. I volunteer with incarcerated youth and my fiance has a felony. It's difficult for me to grasp that societies answer for a mistake is to make it nearly impossible to find a job or housing. Rehabilitative services are much more sustainable than making life more difficult for someone that clearly needed help. I wish you the best.

Here is a good thing to do:

go to craigslist dot org

go to the housing section

search for "credit -background -criminal"

This will bring up a list of all the postings that have credit in them but not background or criminal. In theory, these rentals would not do a background check, but just because they don't say they will do a background check doesn't necessarily mean they won't

addendum. Felon friendly housing is incredibly difficult to find (sorry i know that's not the answer you are looking for). Search in craigslist for "felon friendly" not just credit/criminal. You may consider also putting in an ad yourself searching for housing. Be upfront. You don't want to waste your time. You may just end up having to rent a room in someone's house, which a lot of us end up having to do. Network network network. Depending on what your felony was...if it was addiction related & you have proof that it was & did some kind of rehab. You will want to bring it up as a "disability" reasonable accommodation request. Not a guarantee I don't think. But a better chance & definitely worth bringing up. Read about fair housing laws.
