You are probably thinking of the opening of the Suez Canal; Verdi is sometimes believed to have written Aida to commemorate that event, though that is questionable.

No he only wrote the music. The "lyrics", properly called the libretto, were written by Antonio Ghislanzoni.

The opera Aida was written in 1870-1871 by Giuseppe Verdi. It was to have its premiere in Cairo in January 1871 but because of the Franco Prussian War it was postponed to December of 1871.
