Americans travelled to Paris 4 times pleading for their help in the war, now the French despised the British who were the dominant world power and so they agreed..and were semi-secretly involved from the get-go supplying 90% of gunpowder stocks in 1776, as well as artillary, troops and a navy (Americans didnt have one)...the Spanish then the Dutch both later assisted America also but it was the French who were the major thwart to the British who hadnt bargained for this assistance so only brought a smaller % of their military assuming a straightforward victory over the rebels (Americans)
