To sum up...an historical quotation.."it is a War America could not have survived without French assistance". Americans travelled to Paris 4 times pleading for their help in the war, now the French despised the British who were the dominant world power and so they agreed..and were semi-secretly involved from the get-go supplying 90% of gunpowder stocks in 1776, as well as artillary, troops and a navy (Americans didnt have one)...the Spanish then the Dutch both later assisted America also but it was the French who were the major thwart to the British who hadnt bargained for this assistance so only brought a smaller % of their military assuming a straightforward victory over the rebels (Americans)

...the French were decisive.

The French supplied arms, ammunition, and credit to the Patriot cause prior to the Battle of Saratoga. After the American victory at Saratoga the French King was convinced of the real possibility of an American victory and increased his support to include French military land and sea forces. Particularly noteable were the contributions of the Marquis de Lafayette on land, and Admiral DeGrasse at sea.

The French were the American's support during the war. They sent weapons, money, troops and even officiers, like Lafayette, to train the America soldiers. However, it was more likely out of spite for England than out of the kindness of the French king's heart.
