One of the main themes in Of Mice and Men is 'loneliness and isolation'. On a large scale, the ranch itself is very isolated, and the only link that the ranch workers have to the outside world are magazines.

Certain characters in the novel are also lonely. Crooks is the black stable buck. When the novel was written, there was still racism. This is reflected in the book, as Crooks sleeps in the barn and not the bunkhouse with the other men.
