Ok I will assume that you have the snake skinned and ready to tan.

Start by tacking the shinm out on a board. Streatch it taught but not so tight that the pins begin to tear the skin.

Salt the skin completely and let it sit foir about 15 to 20 minuets. This will dessicate the skin and cause the grissle to contract, pulling away from the skin.

Rinse the skin with water and rub off the remaining grissel and meat if any. Place it in a jar of milk. Yes folks. I said milk. The lactic acid in the milk will break down the skins cells and allow it to become pliable.

Actually you can use any type of acid. Tannic acid is what they use foor tannuing cow hides. This is what gives the leather the tan look. It is also where the word tanning is derived. Tannic acid can be found in oak trees, acorns (favorite source of many Indian tribes), sumac (not poisen sumac), and many other trees. Some tanners even use car battery acid, but I don't recommend this for a rooky tanner.

Once it has set in the milk for about 24 hours remove it and rinse it with a mixture of 1/4 cuo vinagar and 1 gallon of water. This will neutrilise any acid that remains. Rinse well with water and let it dry.

You should now have a nice skin ready for oiling and the final stage of the tanning process. Useing glycerin rub it into the skin well. Roll, kneed, and rub some more until the skin is well softened. The more you rub it the softer it will become.

Many Indian tribe females would actually chew the leather that they used for the more delicate places of the body that needed to be clothed. One tribe in particular (sorry I don't recall the name) the potential wife of a brave would make a pair of moccosins in this manner to give to the young warrior during the courting process. This was the equivalent of an engagement ring.

Hope this helps. Your comments are always welcome.

Best, THS
