A U.S. District Court judge sentenced the former treasurer at Seed Faith International Church to two years' probation Friday for helping the church's minister cover up millions of dollars in assets during bankruptcy proceedings.
U.S. District Judge Roger W. Titus also sentenced Jeffrey Mont, 33, to nine months of home detention and 40 hours of community service, according to an email from Marcia Murphy, a spokeswoman with the U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland.
Mont pleaded guilty March 15 to obstruction of official court proceedings and admitted helping create phony church records and forwarding them to the federal grand jury investigating the Rev. Robert "Dr. Shine" Freeman, lead pastor of the Waldorf church, for hiding assets during his own bankruptcy proceeding, including a $1.75 million waterfront mansion, a fleet of luxury cars and a private jet.
Mont, who faced a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, started volunteering full time with the church in June 2008, a year before the federal grand jury began investigating Freeman.
