Has any one athlete ever played all three professional sports - baseball football and basketball?

[Edit]

JIM THORPE starred in professional football, played Major League Baseball and also had a short stint in professional basketball.

Professional Baseball: Jim Thorpe played for the New York Giants, the Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Braves. Thorpe scored 91 runs, had 82 RBI and hit .252 in his 289 games played.

Professional Football: Jim Thorpe played for the Canton Bulldogs in the American Professional Football Association, which became the NFL. He played 52 NFL games.

Professional Basketball: Recently, it was learned that Jim Thorpe played pro basketball for a team call ed "Jim Thorpe and His World-Famous Indians". Although they were not an NBA team, they were professionals.

Thorpe also won Olympic Gold Medals in the Pentathlon and the Decathlon

It's close, but no cigar for NBA great DAVE DEBUSSCHERE, who played both professional basketball and Major League Baseball.

Professional Basketball: DeBusschere played in the NBA for the Detroit Pistons and the New York Knickerbockers in his storied basketball career.

Professional Baseball: DeBusschere played for the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs organizations. He pitched in 36 games with a 3-4 record.

Bo Jackson played in MLB and the NFL. It is quite remarkable that Bo Jackson played both sports AT THE SAME TIME.

Deion Sanders played both Major League Baseball and in the NFL at the same time. Sanders played a nine-year, part-time baseball career, playing 641 games with 4 teams. During his most productive year, 1992, he hit .304 for the Braves, stole 26 bases, and led the NL with 14 triples in 97 games. During the 1989 season, he hit a home run and scored a touchdown in the NFL in the same week, the only player to do so. Sanders is the only man to play in both a Super Bowl and a World Series. Sanders's professional football career started the same year as his baseball career, 1989. He was the fifth pick overall in the 1989 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons.

I cannot think of a guy who played in all three sports at the highest level. Guys who come to mind who have played in the NBA and major-league baseball are DeBusschere, Frankie Baumholtz, Chuck Connors, Danny Ainge, Ron Reed, Gene Conley and Cotton Nash. I am sure there are others.

Dave Winfield only played Major League baseball but he was drafted by the NBA after being a starting forward at University of Minnesota and was drafted as a tight end by the Minnesota Vikings. I believe that makes him the only person drafted by all three major sports.

Also, Mark Hendrickson, currently a Pitcher for the Florida Marlins, played several years in the NBA, notably for the Clippers and 76ers.

Dick Groat, the 1960 NL MVP, also played in the NBA. He is also in the Duke University Basketball Hall of Fame. Last I checked, they had a pretty good basketball tradition.

Two other duel MLB/NBA Athletes were Howie Schultz and Bill Sharman.

MLB HOF Pitcher Bob Gibson played a year with the Harlem Globetrotters.
