One of the guys that lives with me has Magic Jack. He uses it to call his family in Canada while he's in the states for school. It works pretty well for the most part but sometimes they have trouble hearing him like the connection is too dim and they can't hear him well. His computer isn't the greatest and when his computer is having problems then magic jack often does too. Still, can't beat $40 a year. I say go for it.

Our experince is possibly unique since the family is strewn around the world. Magicjack is a huge savior... LD phone calls are frequent and most are free within the MJ plan or dirt cheap otherwise.
actually annual fee is $20/yr = $20 to buy the unit. Fits in your pocket and readily attachs via the USB and then quickly installs itself on any computer.
In my family we have a number of magicjacks.
stepson talks to mother - New Caledonia - Canada
niece talks to mather - Jamaica - Canada
myself and 2 brothers-in-law - Florida/Texas - Canada
Current family emergency and we are all talking to each other.
If need be you can use their long distance service to call others outside N America. Rates are dirt cheap.

I purchased the magic jack about 3 months ago and I haven't had any problems with it at all. Crystal clear reception and no drop calls or anything like that. I kept my cable voip line also "just in case" for the first month I had magic jack but it was a waste so I cancelled it and have been using only the magic jack for the last 2 months. At $20 a year you really can't go wrong I think.
