NO philosopher have nothing to do with discovering cells. The biggest role of philosophers is to make you think outside the box. The thinking outside the box is to say that you should think independently. Also this is to say you should test the standard to see if they are right or true. The greatest philosophers talked to experience people, found out what they knew and used there understanding with the experience person understanding in that field to make the best possible decision.
