The universe began 13.7 billion years ago, perhaps as a quantum fluctuation. It expanded very rapidly, during a brief period of time known as inflation, and underwent distinct stages where the fundamental forces separated or decoupled.
One of the more significant events in the early universe occurred some 300,000 years after the initial "big bang." This was known as matter synthesis, or primordial nucleosynthesis, where the quark soup cooled sufficiently for hydrogen gas to precipitate. Light shone for the first time and cosmologists suggest the universe may have rung like a bell.
After that the stars and galaxies rapidly formed. Quasars and stellar nucleosynthesis (fusion) offer insights into the subsequent evolution and chemical evolution of our universe. Earth itself formed some 4.5 billion years ago, from the aggregation of debris orbiting our young sun.
The history of the universe is a matter of cosmology--a most fascinating science. I highly recommend delving into it.
