Sustainable development is a term that refers to development that is environmentally conscious. There are numerous factors taken into account, including but not limited to: geographical development of the site, choice of building materials, energy conservation and waste reduction and recycling. Another related issue is the idea of "green design," which is somewhat analgous to "sustainable development."
