According to sources I have consulted, the US and South Vietnam lost 72 men.
North Vietnamese losses are unknown as they dragged away their dead whenever possible, but 630 NVA bodies were counted after the battle.
Over 70 GIs and an estimated 700 NVA were Kia on Hamburger Hill. US wounded were over 370 men. There were bloodier battles in Vietnam than Hamburger Hill, but the press had gotten a hold of it and turned the battle into an "issue" that reached the floor of the US Congress in which Senator Edward Kennedy made a statement saying to the effect that "...sending American boys to perish on a remote hilltop to satisfy military pride..." & "...then to abandon the hill shortly after its capture..." this further fuelled the media and then a magazine published the "faces" of about 270 more men in their 1969 issue, depicting GIs killed in action that week; but the photos being shown with that article...which was addressing Hamburger Hill, implied that those men were killed on Hamburger Hill. Now the whole nation became further upset; and it all went down hill after that.
Note: NVA casualties were heavier because US jets dropped over a half a million tons of bombs on the hill (this excludes artillery, rockets, and naplam).

Men looked like hamburger meat once they'd been impacted by high velocity projectiles (bullets and shrapnel, and concussion). Do NOT believe in television or any other action packed movie filmed in the 21st century (and a lot of 20th century films). Human bodies look like road kills on modern battlefields. In movies, especially COP SHOWS, every "body" looks like the person is just laying down (which they are) or sleeping (which they might be). That's NOT the way they look in real life. The number one greatest fear of the average GI in Vietnam was not dying! It was looking like "THAT" (a road kill)! There was a saying in Vietnam (one of many), "Live fast, die young, and be a BEAUTIFUL CORPSE!"
