To marcotte a plant is the same as air-layering it. This is when the outer layer of the plant (usually bark from a tree) is removed and the area is wrapped in moss to keep it moist. The main idea is to make sure roots will grow from the area. All of the bark in the area must be removed or it will grow back and grow over the exposed area.

1-Remove a ring of bark 3 to 5 cm long below the node of the parent plant you want to propagate.

2-Scrape the cambium layer to prevent healing before root formation takes place. Do not scrape too deep in the wood.

3-Wrap the cut surface with moist or wet sphagnum moss or clay-loam soil. This will serve as the marcot.

4-Cover the marcot securely with a plastic sheet. Coconut husk may also be used to wrap the marcot, but more frequent watering must be done because it dries faster than plastic.

5-Secure both ends of the marcot covered with plastic sheet with a piece of cotton twine to prevent drying of the rooting medium.

6-When sufficient roots have formed, cut off the marcot just below the ball of the rooting medium that holds the roots.

7-After cutting the marcotted plant, trim its leaves and place in a plastic bag or pot with sufficient room for further development of roots.

8-Place the newly marcotted plant in a cool and shady place to hasten recovery.

9-After recovery and when the root system has developed, the seedling can be transplanted to where it is best suited to grow.
