Mgs (machine gunners) killed most of them. This is partly true. The army air commands did not bomb the mine fields, the bunkers cause they were too high for the bombs to do any damage. Most landed far away from the beach. They should have bomb the bunkers from point a to z in a straight line, instead of hitting them in the front or back.
The paratroopers should have work their way toward the bunkers. true, many were drop miles from their target. What did they have to stop an tank. Not much. Most of their equipment was lost anyway. They could have taken out the bunkers and save a lot of lives.
The dd sherman tank was a good idea, but they drop the shermans too far out and seems they did not test them in rough water. Too many sank on the way in and fail to make it to the beach, where at least they could have made a different. yea, the MG 42 killed a lot of allies, but so did the lack of.
