Where did art start?

Art started 40,000 years ago as a way for early people to express thoughts.

In the stone age caves. We have findings from France, Spain and Central Europe.

But we do not know what is lost or just not discovered.

Art most likely originated out of a necessity for early man to more accurately express and convey his ideals and emotions. I believe that the first real substantial evidence of this theory was found In the 1940's. During the 1940's, a group of kids stumbled upon a large cave in France (Lascaux Cave). In this cave they found paintings of animals that were important to the humans living at the time of the Paleolithic age.

On the walls of the cave were pictures of horses, bulls, and other four legged animals like Ibex and deer. The popular thought amongst art scholars was that the deer were drawn as to convey the importance and necessity to hunt them for food. The bull represents power and is seen through early paintings as well.

So to make things short, Art was created to more accurately and thoroughly illustrate a point or feeling.

Homo-Sapien's are genetically equip with artistic and abstract qualities. That's what separates them from the Neanderthal and other human-like branches. So, you could say that art began with the beginning of the Homo-Sapien, but specifically you could say cave paintings.

This can be seen in the Cave Paintings, Lascaux, France, circa 15,000-13,000 BC. A stone sculpture known as 'The Venus of Willendorf' dates between 25,000-20,000 BC. Most art historians agree that art developed as a way for man to understand and relate to the world.

In Greek mythology the inventors of the arts were the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, goddess of memory. They dropped all the ideas for art on to the heads of humans. They were:

Terpsichore - the one who delights in dance - muse of dance

Thalia - the blossoming one - muse of comedy

Urania - the celestial one - muse of astronomy

The Hindus and Buddhists believed there were female spirits or nymphs called Apsaras who were in charge of art.
