They actually can't eat almost anything. I don't know how that myth came to be, but I raise goats and their stomachs are actually quite sensitive. They have a particular delicate balance of bacteria in their rumen (they are ruminant animals, like cows and sheep) and if that balance is upset, they can become sick and even possibly die. If they overeat, they can also upset this balance and become sick. If we give them antibiotics for any reason, we have to follow up with probiotics, similar to yogurt for people, which help to restore that delicate balance.

Goats have a cud, and that's a critical part of their digestion process. Upsetting the balance sometimes causes them not to have a cud, and some goat producers even "rob" a cud from another goat to help restore the natural balance of bacteria in the sick goat's rumen.

If I had to guess about the origins of the myth of goats eating anything and everything, I would have to say that they arevery curious, and they do like to take things into their mouths out of curiosity. It is common for them to tug on my clothes when I do chores, and I suppose some might think that they are "eating my clothes." They are also very mischievous, and would not be surprised to hear that a goat took down an entire clothesline of clothes, just because it could.

The typical image of a goat being shown to eat anything is one eating a license plate or tin can. According to Wikipedia, license plates have not always been made of metal, in fact, they have been made of cardboard, leather and pressed soybeans. I would not be surprised if a goat ate a license plate made out of pressed soybeans! And the goats would not have eaten
the tin can, but I am sure that they would have been interested in the goodies that were left behind inside the discarded tin can.
