Both derive, as so-called Romance languages, from Latin (as does English, also). As such, many words are similar, with slight differences;

ENGLISH FRENCH SPANISH by contrast GERMAN

difference difference diferencia Unterschied

similarity similitude similitud Aehnlichkeit

man homme hombre Mann

NB The English-German 'man/Mann' similarity (as against 'homme/hombre'), deriving from the Anglo-Saxon element in English.

Besides the fact that they speak the same language, all of the countries were originally inhabited by native Americans (Mostly Aztec, Incans and Mayans) that were mostly killed off by the arrival of the Spaniards in Central and South Americas.

Because of their proximity to one another and the fact that they were all at one point under Spanish rule, many of them share similar independence dates. Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua all have the same Independence Day (September 15, 1821).

The US won Puerto Rico as the result of what war?

The US won the Spanish American war, and Puerto Rico was part of the war loot. Spain ceded or as a result of the war was forced to transfer the island to the US. At that point in time Puerto Rico had achieved an autonomical form of Government, similar to what it has now with the US. But was still an overseas territory or colonial enclave of Spain, similar again to the current status with the US. The similarities of both situations for the Island and it's people are many.
