Some Indians didn't live in houses, they lived in tents or shacks which are less safe and secured. They could be blown over or broken into. Although, there are four types of Indian living places.
There were many more than four different types of Indian homes. There were the longhouses and wigwams of the northern woodland tribes. The Cherokee lived in log cabins. The Apaches lived in Wikiups....
Maison is House ( note similarity to Mansion) I think the usage is about the same. Certain words in English have house in them but are more accurately Rooms - the Wheelhouse of a ship, for example....
