One is that Jesus is a descendant of David. It was Joseph the foster father of Jesus that have links to King David. See Mathew 1:1-16 === === David lived about a millennium before Jesus did. David composed the book of Psalms which Jews used to pray from when the religion that Jesus founded would harass and murder them.

He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God SHALL GIVE UNTO HIM THE THRONE OF HIS FATHER DAVID: and He shall reign over the House of Jacob for ever; and of His Kingdom there shall be no end." The Gospel of Matthew links Jesus to King David by descent and by being born in the town of Bethlehem.

Although Raymond E. Brown (An Introduction to the New Testament) says it is unlikely to be historically accurate, the genealogy traces Jesus back through Joseph and the male line to King David. Contradicting this, he also says that Mary conceived Jesus as a virgin.

Matthew suggests that Bethlehem was the home town of Joseph and Mary, so that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the birthplace of King David.

Yair Zakovitch, dean of humanities at Hebrew University has this to say, "Look, the Gospels are a very good piece of Jewish literature, and they understand that one cannot have a messianic leader who is not Davidic. If you want to convince the Jews that Jesus is the one, he has to be linked with David. He has to fulfill the prophecies. A messiah king has to be born in Bethlehem, he has to come to Jerusalem. Sure enough, when Jesus enters Jerusalem he enters on a donkey, because that's what we read in Zechariah 9."

A:The first century Jews believed that their longed-for Messiah would be a descendant of King David, so if Jesus was not said to have been in this line of descent the Jews could easily have denied that he was the Christ, their hoped-for Messiah. Therefore a relationship by descent was important, to sustain the Christian story.

To demonstrate the lineage of Jesus, the Gospels of both Matthew and Luke provided genealogies back through Joseph to David: Matthew through Joseph's father Jacob and Lukethrough Joseph's father Heli. Raymond E. Brown (An Introduction to the New Testament) says there are many differences in Matthew's and Luke's genealogies, and those who think of Luke as having tradition stemming from Mary have tried to argue that his is the true family genealogy of Jesus or even to reconcile the two genealogies. He says there is little likelihood that either is strictly historical. So strong is this desire to prove the relationship of Jesus to David that in modern times some Christians have tried to identify Luke's genealogy as being back through Mary (in spite of Luke 3:23), thereby providing two separate lines of descent from David.

There are two genealogies of Jesus in the New Testament, going back through Joseph and the male line to David and beyond, one in Matthew and one in Luke. Because of irreconcilable differences in the accounts, with Matthew saying that Joseph's father was called Jacob and Luke saying that Joseph's father was called Heli, some people think that Luke's version is the genealogy of Mary, in spite of Luke 3:23.

In the first genealogy of Jesus, Matthew demonstrates that there were 14 generations: from Abraham to David; from David to Josiah; from Josiah to Jesus. To do this, it has to ignore 3 kings in the Old Testament and have David in the preceding (as 14) and following (as 1) groups, but not so Josiah. Then, we have no possible way of verifying Matthew's list of Jesus' ancestors from the time of the Exile.

Luke has great men occur in multiples of 7 generations starting from Adam, with: Enoch at 7; Abraham at 21; David at 35; Jesus at 77. It also has: Joseph at 42 and 70; Jesus (Jose) at 49. To do this, it has to insert its own fictitious people into the Old Testament list: Kainan at 13; Admin at 28. Once again, we have no possible way of verifying Luke's list of Jesus' ancestors after King David.

The following table compares the three genealogies from the Old Testament, Matthew and Luke. Luke has Joseph and Jesus descended from a line of commoners after King David, which is why it is different to both the Old Testament and Matthewfrom David to Salathiel. As both Matthew and Lukehave Salathiel and Zorobabel in their genealogies, this has required them to list Salathiel with a different father in each case. The last two kings in the Old Testament are shown in parentheses as they were not son or grandson of their predecessor. Minor differences of spelling are not relevant.

We can see that Matthew follows the royal line reasonably faithfully, apart from changes to suit his numerology, used to prove that Jesus was destined for greatness. Luke diverges by having Jesus follow a line of commoners back to David, consistent with this gospel's theology of concern for the poor. Since both gospels wanted to include not only David but Zorobabel in Jesus' genealogy, Luke was forced to change the name of Zorobabel's paternal grandfather.

What king did the Jews believe Jesus would be descended from?

The Jews had no expectations for Jesus because they did not regard him as the Messiah. However they did believe that the hoped-for Messiah would be descended from King David. It has been pointed out that a thousand years after the time attributed to David, possibly two million Jews could claim to be descended from David.
