The drugs most commonly smuggled into America include: * Marijuana (less and less, competing with the American crop) * Heroin * Cocaine and derrivatives * Hashish (quite rare and easy to detect, bulky). The focus has moved from single-man transports ("mules") over to larger shipments -- more than a man could carry in an airplane -- al though this does remain a means of completing small transports. Primary routes by sea and air are: * From Central and South America up to the Southeast Coast of America (sometimes via ports in the carribean). * From Central and South America to the Gulf Coast. * From Central and South America to the Southwest coast of California. The waters grow less navigable north of Point Conception, so transport lessens from that point north. * From Asia into the West Coast. * From Asia to Europe (often for refining), and from there to the Atlantic NorthEast (sea route usually). * Individual yachts have run from the Golden Triangle area into the Pacific Coast of America, but piracy in the South China Sea has reduced this traffic. Land routes include: * From Central and South America into Mexico (the Columbain Cartels have retreated from the transport business and are focusing solely on production. Mexican cartels have been awarded the rights to transportation.) * From Mexico into Texas, New Mexico and Southern California. Cargo containers, small cargo packets and trucks are now the container of choice, instead of the old all-a-man-can-carry method, although Cash Mules carrying currency still exist. Air and sea interdiction in the Atlantic Southeast and Gulf COast regions have slowed illicit air and sea transport significantly. On the other hand, alleged complicity on the part of the Mexican Government up to at least the Federale level has allowed for armed convoys to traverse Mexico, reputedly under Army or Police escort, all the way to the border, where the load is trnasferred to a variety of heacy-carry vehicles with permits that traverse the border.
