In a cathode-ray tube (CRT), a beam of electrons is used to light up the phosphors on the screen. The direction of the beam is controlled by two electromagnets. One sweeps the beam horizontally while the other steps it down vertically. In the American television standard (NTSC), there are 15750 horizontal scans per second, covering the entire screen 30 times per second.

Yes they are. They're part of the yoke assembly on a CRT, which is used for guiding the electrons across the face of the picture tube. They're also used for the same purpose on older three tube projection TV's, with a set for each projection tube: Red, green and blue.

As a rule, televisions and magnets do not play well together. The CRT, or Cathode Ray Tube (picture tube) is adversely affected by magnetic radiation.

CRT's televisions use magnets to focus the stream of electrons to the screen, therefore forming the picture. The impact of holding a powerful magnet to the CRT screen is a distortion of the stream. This results in the colorful display you see.

Newer plasma and LCD screens do not use magnets and work off a different technology.

a television camera converts the pattern of light it takes in into a pattern of electrical charges. This is scanned line by line by a beam of electrons from an electron gun, resulting in variable electrical signals that represent the picture. These signals are combined with a radio carrier wave and broadcast as electromagnetic waves. The receiving 'aerial' (antenna) or satellite dish picks up the wave and feeds it to the receiver (TV set)'

In old CRT (tube) televisions, electromagnets pull the electrons fired from the back of the tube towards the front of the tube, to a particular area of the screen. By constantly varying the magnetic pull, they can direct electrons across and up and down the screen to form an image.

Magnets are not used in modern flat screens, such as plasma or LCD.

The only other place you can find magnets in all TV's, is in the loudspeaker(s)

The magnet here forms the permanenet magnetic fields for the speech coil to work on and deflect the cone, producing sound.

Do televisions use magnets?

Not so much with modern TVs; cathode ray tubes used powerful magnets to focus the electron stream. Modern LCD and Plasma TVs don't use magnets. Some televisions do use magnets, It just depends on which one. :D
