Elements are the simplest form of matter, and cannot be broken down be it physically or chemically. (e.g.: fluorine, carbon, silicon, bromine, chlorine) Compounds are made up of two or more elemnts chemically combined. The smallest particle in a compound is a molecule.

Elements are substances that have only a single type of atom, such as element 1, hydrogen; element 2, helium; element 8, oxygen; etc. Elements do have molecules consisting of two or more atoms, but those atoms are the same type. There are 80 stable, naturally occurring elements.

Compounds are composed of two or more different elements, their atoms bonded in a specific ratio and structure. For example, two atoms of hydrogen an one atom of oxygen make a molecule of water. There are tens of thousands, possibly millions of compounds in nature.

Does an element become a compound when the type of atoms is changed?

Yes, the element changes to compound when atoms of it changes because compound is made up of different types of element and the element is made up of different types of atoms when the atoms are changed the element also changes and different types of elements are made due to this the element is changed to a compound.
