It is widely recognized that the diversity of life on Earth as we know it, forms an Ecological balance, whereby living things rely on each other for existence. The endangered species act promotes the survival on species of animals that are threatened with extinction if overly hunted or poached. The direct answer is that the endangered species act protects animals by:

1) Studies the number of populations of certain animals over large geographic areas or in certain ecosystems.

2) Recognizes the positive or needed impact of threatened species on certain ecosystems

3) Controls the number of animals that can be hunted or killed to prevent a species being killed off to extinction.

4) Sets up preserves (or parks) where animals cannot be hunted or killed, in order to maintain a specie's existence.

5) Gives authority to different law enforcement agencies to enforce protection laws for species identified as endangered.

6) Balances rural rancher's needs of raising livestock with environmental groups' efforts toward re-introduction programs of certain species' back to their natural habitats.

* BALANCE* is the key issue to preserving species, and the Endangered Species Act. In an ecological system (a forest, for example): If all the large predators that prey on deer are killed off, then the deer population increases exponentially, and the large herds eat all the plants of a certain type that they forage on. Other animals might need that specific type of plant to thrive (such as Monarch Butterflies to Milkweed Plants). If deer are overly hunted in that same forest, natural predators will die off because they can't find prey to hunt; *and* vegetation that is eaten by the deer, will grow exponentially, which when they die cause the forest to be littered with dense undergrowth, and thus be a nightmare if a forest fire were to result.

There are many reasons why endangered animals should be protected. These reasons include them being apart of food chains that can kill other organisms if they become extinct, some endangered animals are used for resources, and that once they are extinct they will never come back.

three ways to insure the protection of animals for generations to come are

1)laws and regulations

if in the event that an animal is endangered due to poaching, special laws and regulations can be put out to hopefully bring back the numbers. another instance is when a species is being over-hunted by another animal species higher in the food chain. This can happen when there is an overpopulation of any level of the food chain, and that may also bring down numbers, although many species are endangered or diminished due to human development.

2) worldwide programs

once an animal is protected, the animal is in most instances bred in captivity. this indeed can be a challenging process because you need to match up a successive breeding pair for the sucess of the species. to make this possible, worldwide programs are put into effect. For example, if you are dealing with an endangered bird (and you are a zoo), you would have to be qualified as a good place to raise the birds. the fasinating part about this worldwide program is that they almost have a "matchmaking" service. With that in mind, a zoo in Maryland may have a male bird, and a zoo in Illinois may have a female bird. So, they plan the pairs out in advance.

3)raise awareness

another part i believe in protecting an endangered species is raising awareness about the animal. if people know about the species, not only donations but protection can be offered. I stated this because if people know "hey! there is an endangered species out here!" then you can have these people protect this species in the future. these animals do not have a voice, but we do. So, if we all band together we can create a huge scream and talk for them.

in conclusion, the three main 'steps' to ensure an animals protection is laws and regulations, worldwide programs, and raise awareness. Laws and regulations is to stop animal declination to an extent. worldwide programs is to bring back the species and raise the diminishing numbers. Finally, raise awareness is to , well, raise awareness! I hope this article helped, and i hope i provided you with the information you were looking for

To protect endangered species, poaching should be discouraged. Protecting natural habitats and environments can also help protect many endangered species.
