Ethics and laws are closely related. Both describe how people ought to act. People do, however, disagree with what is right or wrong, and therefore disagree with what should or should not be law.

Law is typically founded on ethics. People as a whole have a basic feel for what is right and correct. Law is based on taking these beliefs and making rules to enforce them, as well as punish those who don't follow them. As society changes, the ethics they find to be socially acceptable shift regarding some areas and the laws may have to be adjusted to match.

It is entirely possible to do things totally within the letter of the law, but be considered by many to be ethically corrupt.

Much of the law is based on ethics. When a business operates ethically, they will not get in to legal trouble.

since the law is made by people it is imperfect. Legislators and judges bring their own personal opinions and their own views on ethics and morality to the lawmaking process.
